  • Patent number: 4608640
Abstract: An apparatus controls the operation of a regenerative device for generating a quantity of heat to burn the exhaust particles collected in a trap located in the exhaust conduit of an internal combustion engine. The apparatus is responsive to the pressures on the inlet and outlet sides of the trap for calculating a pressure differential across the trap and a threshold value for comparison therewith as a function of the pressure on the inlet side of the trap. The apparatus operates the regenerative device to regenerate the trap when the pressure differential across the trap reaches the calculated threshold value.

  • Patent number: 4603550
Abstract: A filter disposed in an engine exhaust passage traps particles suspended in exhaust gas. A burner serves to burn off the particles deposited on the filter. The pressures in the exhaust passage at points upstream and downstream of the filter are sensed. A determination is made as to whether or not the sensed upstream pressure is lower than a preset level. When the sensed upstream pressure is not lower than the preset level, the degree of clogging of the filter is deduced on the basis of the sensed upstream and downstream pressures. When the sensed upstream pressure is lower than the preset level, the degree of clogging of the filter is deduced on the basis of a time elapsed since the moment at which the sensed upstream pressure dropped below the preset level and on the basis of the sensed upstream and downstream pressures obtained immediately prior to that moment.

  • Patent number: 4567725
Abstract: An apparatus controls the operation of a regenerative device for generating a quantity of heat to burn the exhaust particles collected in a trap located in the exhaust conduit of an internal combustion engine. The apparatus is responsive to the pressures on the inlet and outlet sides of the trap to detect a regeneration requirement to operate the regenerative device so as to regenerate the trap. The apparatus is also responsive to the engine speed and engine load to control the quantity of heat the regenerative device generates so as to maintain the inlet side of the trap at a target temperature during the regeneration period.

  • Patent number: 4538413
Abstract: An exhaust passage extends from an internal combustion engine to conduct exhaust from the engine. A filter is disposed in the exhaust passage to catch particles in the exhaust. A burner is disposed in the exhaust passage at a position upstream of the filter. The burner receives a mixture of air and fuel and burns the mixture to burn off the particles deposited on the filter. The burner includes a vaporizing member and a guide member.

  • Patent number: 4522028
Abstract: An apparatus controls the operation of a regenerative burner having a glow plug operable to ignite and burn a combustible mixture supplied into the burner to burn the exhaust particles collected in a trap located in the exhaust conduit of an internal combustion engine when a trap regeneration requirement occurs. A control device is provided which detects a broken wire in the glow plug and stops the supply of combustible mixture to the burner in the presence of brokage of the glow plug wire.

  • Patent number: 4522027
Abstract: An exhaust passage extends from an internal combustion engine to conduct exhaust from the engine. A filter is disposed in the exhaust passage to filter particles out of the exhaust. A burner is disposed in the exhaust passage upstream of the filter to burn off the particles deposited on the filter. Fuel is supplied to the burner for a preset time when the filter clogs. The supplied fuel is ignited in the burner. In the case where the fuel supplied to the burner ceases to burn prior to the end of the preset time, the fuel supply to the burner is interrupted.

  • Patent number: 4313415
Abstract: In an exhaust gas recirculation system of a compression ignition internal combustion engine, there are provided two passages, that is, an EGR passage for recirculation of exhaust gases and a by-pass passage by-passing the throttle valve in the induction passage to allow a supplemental air flow to the engine when EGR is cut off in definite engine operating conditions. These two passages are arranged to join together at a junction, in which there is provided a valve to open and close these two passages alternatively so that an adequate EGR control is performed in accordance with engine operating conditions with a simplified mechanism.

  • Patent number: 4295455
Abstract: An exhaust gas recirculation control system for a compression-ignition internal combustion engine or diesel engine including an intake throttle valve in an intake passage and an exhaust gas recirculation passage opening downstream of the intake throttle valve, comprises a shut-off valve in the exhaust gas recirculation passage so that the shut-off valve is closed in the proximity of a full load region of the engine.

  • Patent number: 3993037
Abstract: A vent valve allows a combustion chamber arranged to burn a swirling lean mixture to communicate with either an intake manifold or exhaust manifold through a vent port by-passing the intake or exhaust valve, for a short period just before ignition to discharge a fraction of the mixture from the combustion chamber. The discharge weakens the turburent flow of the mixture and results in a decreased combustion temperature, which is advantageous for suppression of NOx formation and prevention of combustion noise generation.
