  • Patent number: 5215587
Abstract: A sealant applicator for dispensing sealant material under pressure from a nozzle onto a succession of can lids which are advanced into alignment with the sealant applicator nozzle includes a needle valve which is positively driven in a forward and reverse direction to open and close the nozzle under the control of a pair of solenoids arranged in back-to-back relation and an adjustable limit stop member to regulate the amount of sealant applied to each can lid. One or more sealant applicators may be mounted for rotation in synchronism with a rotatable chuck table and are program-controlled to control the amount of sealant applied to each lid.

  • Patent number: 4262629
Abstract: A can end lining mechanism has been devised for sequentially advancing can ends from a downstacker mechanism into registry with each of a series of can end receiving recesses in a rotary chuck table where as each can is advanced into a recess it is simultaneously lifted, rotated about its own axis, and rotated about the axis of the chuck table while sealant is applied to the peripheral groove of the can end for a predetermined time interval, after which the lined end is released and the centrifugal force of rotation of the table is sufficient to discharge the end. Feed interrupt mechanism is provided throughout in order to interrupt delivery of the ends from the feed area as well as to interrupt the application of sealant when a can lid is not properly in position. Synchronous drive means are provided for coordinating the movement of the can lids from the feed area through the discharge station.

  • Patent number: 4186678
Abstract: There is disclosed an easy-opening convenience end for generally cylindrical containers in which an end closure has a push tab or gate panel formed out of the thickness of the end closure and displaced beneath the plane of the end closure with a folded protective edge circumscribing the outer periphery of the gate panel, except for a limited portion which defines a hinge section between the gate panel and end closure. The folded edge tapers or otherwise merges into the thickness of the end closure adjacent to the hinge section, and a line of weakening or separation is formed between the fold and gate panel by a metal shearing operation so as to permit opening of the end closure by depression of the tab inwardly about its hinge section.Modified forms of ends incorporate relatively broad reinforcing areas in the closure surrounding opposite sides of the gate panel to facilitate initial separation of the gate panel away from the end.
