    Abstract: A matrix liquid crystal display using an antiferroelectric liquid crystal prevents the displayed image from tailing off. The liquid crystal display includes a liquid crystal panel, a temperature sensor, a control unit, a scanning electrode driver circuit, and a signal electrode driver circuit. When the temperature of the liquid crystal panel is detected by the temperature sensor, the control unit increases or reduces the de-select period according to the detected temperature. The scanning electrode driver circuit and the signal electrode driver circuit serve to drive scanning electrodes and signal electrodes, respectively included in the liquid crystal panel according to control signals from the control unit and from a level converter. These control signals include a signal indicating the controlled de-select period. Thus, the controlled de-selected period is secured.

    Abstract: The present invention provides a liquid crystal display device having a matrix electrode structure in which flicker of picture images displayed on a panel is invisible. Scanning electrodes of the matrix are driven by alternating voltages which include voltages for holding picture images displayed on the panel. Refresh pulse voltages higher than the holding voltages are imposed on the scanning electrodes every time the polarity of the holding voltages is reversed, so that the brightness of the picture images does not change before and after the reversing of the holding voltage polarity. In case an anti-ferroelectric liquid crystal is used as the liquid crystal, the refresh pulse voltages which cause transitions of the liquid crystal states between positive ferroelectric and negative ferroelectric states and do not cause the transition from an anti-ferroelectric state to the ferroelectric states are imposed on the scanning electrodes.

    Abstract: A scanning signal from a scanning electrode drive circuit and a data signal from a signal electrode drive circuit are applied to a liquid crystal panel to perform image display in the liquid crystal panel. Here, as well as power supply to the scanning electrode drive circuit and the signal electrode drive circuit being from separate power supply circuits, a voltage for producing a data signal in the liquid crystal drive voltage power supply circuit is generated with a central voltage of a liquid crystal drive voltage power supply circuit, which is for generating a voltage for producing the scanning signal, as a reference voltage. Because power is supplied separately to the scanning electrode drive circuit and the signal electrode drive circuit, the breakdown voltage of the signal electrode drive circuit is alleviated and thus power consumption is reduced, and further, flickering does not occur in the display, etc., even if there are fluctuations in the power supply voltage.
