  • Patent number: 11862029
Abstract: Autoland systems and processes for landing an aircraft without pilot intervention are described. In implementations, the autoland system includes a memory operable to store one or more modules and at least one processor coupled to the memory. The processor is operable to execute the one or more modules to identify a plurality of potential destinations for an aircraft; calculate a merit for each potential destination identified; select a destination based upon the merit; and create a route from a current position of the aircraft to an approach fix associated with the destination that accounts for the terrain characteristic(s) and/or obstacle characteristic(s).

  • Publication number: 20190041233
Abstract: Techniques are disclosed for determining an optimized flight path for an aircraft between a starting location and a destination location. The optimized flight path is calculated using flight information such as a starting location and a destination location, identified available emergency landing locations between the starting location and the destination location, and a calculated glide range perimeter of the aircraft. A series of iterative processing steps may be performed using this information to calculate an optimized flight path enabling the aircraft to always have an available landing location within the aircraft's gliding range. The optimized flight path may further utilize information from various data sources, including aircraft data, site data, weather data, and geography data, to more accurately calculate the gliding range and thus, the optimal flight path.

  • Publication number: 20170213468
Abstract: A sensor system is described that leverages low power motion sensors to trigger the activation of higher power proximity sensors. The system may be configured to monitor the motion of a vehicle, such as an aircraft in which it is installed. The sensor system may initially start in a dormant state, and once the vehicle is moved, such as when an aircraft is towed, a proximity sensor may be activated, which draws power from a dedicated battery unit. Once the proximity sensor is activated, the sensor system may continue to monitor proximity data generated by the proximity detection system and sound an alarm if the vehicle comes within a threshold distance of some object. The sensor system may also utilize state of the vehicle's electrical system to recharge the battery and/or to disable various components, thereby optimizing power consumption.

  • Patent number: 8195346
Abstract: An avionics system for a mechanically-controlled aircraft configured to provide envelope protection for deterring a pilot from flying outside of acceptable flight parameter limits for flight parameters such as banking angle, pitch attitude, g loading, proximity to terrain and/or obstacles, angle of attack, and/or airspeed. The avionics system may comprise at least one servo actuator and a computing device. The computing device may engage envelope protection by engaging the at least one servo actuator if the aircraft reaches a maximum or minimum limit for any of the flight parameters, such that the at least one servo actuator provides a force to urge a flight control device in a direction to bring the aircraft back within the acceptable flight parameter limits. The servo actuator may be disengaged when the aircraft flight parameters reach an end value corresponding to the start value that triggered envelope protection to engage.
