  • Publication number: 20110103181
Abstract: A technique includes distributing particle motion sensors along the length of a seismic streamer. Each particle motion sensor is eccentrically disposed at an associated angle about an axis of the seismic streamer with respect to a reference line that is common to the associated angles. The sensors are mounted to suppress torque noise in measurements that are acquired by the particle motion sensors. This mounting includes substantially varying the associated angles.

  • Publication number: 20100202251
Abstract: A technique includes receiving data indicative of a first measurement acquired by a rotation sensor on a seismic streamer and based on the first measurement, estimating a torque noise present in a measurement acquired by a second sensor on the streamer. The technique includes attenuating the torque noise based on the estimate.

  • Publication number: 20100039889
Abstract: An apparatus includes a cable; and a gel-based filler material, seismic sensors that are disposed in the cable. The seismic sensors are suspended in pockets, and each pocket contains a material that has a shear stiffness that is less than a shear stiffness of the gel-based filler material to attenuate a flow noise.

  • Publication number: 20090323468
Abstract: An apparatus includes a cable; and seismic sensors that are disposed in the cable. The apparatus also includes spacers that are distributed in the cable such that each seismic sensor is disposed in an interval of the cable separating a different adjacent pair of the spacers. The spacers of each pair are separated by at least twenty-five centimeters.

  • Publication number: 20090296521
Abstract: An apparatus includes particle motion sensors and a streamer that contains the particle motion sensors. The streamer is to be towed in connection with a seismic survey, and the towing of the streamer produces a turbulent flow. The streamer includes an inner cable that contains the particle motion sensors and a fluid containing layer to surround the inner cable to reduce noise otherwise sensed by the particle motion sensors due to the turbulent flow.

  • Patent number: 7623414
Abstract: A particle motion sensor, includes: a sensing element capable of sensing a particle motion vector from a change in position thereof, and a packing material in which the sensing element is positioned, wherein the particle motion sensor is symmetric about its longitudinal axis and has a center of gravity coincident with its volumetric center. An apparatus includes a streamer; a plurality of acoustic sensors distributed along the streamer; and a plurality of particle motion sensors distributed along the streamer, at least one particle motion sensor being symmetric about its longitudinal axis and having a center of gravity coincident with its volumetric center.

  • Publication number: 20090161487
Abstract: A technique includes determining a displacement of an acoustic sensor while in tow. Based on the determined displacement of the sensor, a measurement that is acquired by the sensor is compensated to remove noise from the measurement.

  • Publication number: 20090092003
Abstract: A technique includes towing a particle motion sensor in connection with a seismic survey and controlling the survey to cause a notch in a frequency response of the particle motion sensor to substantially coincide with a frequency band at which aliased vibration noise appears in a seismic signal acquisition space of the particle motion sensor.

  • Patent number: 7466625
Abstract: A method includes recording a first set of data using a first type of sensor; recording a second set of data using a second type of sensor, the first and second sets of data being contemporaneously acquired by co-located sensors; and removing noise from the first data set using the second data set. An apparatus includes a survey vessel towing an array of towed streamers including a plurality of paired, co-located sensors densely distributed along the streamers. A first one of each sensor pair is of a first type and a second one of each sensor pair is of a second type. A computing apparatus records a first set of data acquire by the first type of sensor and a second data set acquire by the second type of sensor. The computing apparatus then removes noise from the first data set using the second data set.
