  • Patent number: 10807632
Abstract: An adjustable steering column (5) that is designed to absorb energy by collapsing is described. The steering column (5) has a jacket body (10) secured to the vehicle and a steering shaft assembly (17) adjustably and slidably positioned in the jacket body (10). An energy absorbing strap (23) has a second end (26) secured to the jacket body (10) and a first end (25) releasably secured to the steering shaft assembly (17). The energy absorbing strap (23) being disposed to deform to absorb energy when the steering shaft assembly (17) is displaced with respect to the jacket body (10). The energy absorbing strap (23) is deformed at a second predetermined energy absorbing rate. A spring plate (41) has its first end (43) secured to the jacket body (10) and a second end (45) releasably engaging the energy absorbing strap (23). At least one elongated slot (47) is positioned adjacent the first end (43) of the spring plate (41).

  • Publication number: 20160009311
Abstract: The friction clutch includes a first clutching surface and a second clutching surface configured to be pressed against each other. Friction between the surfaces needs to be overcome for one surface to rotate relative to the other. The first clutching surface is configured to be axially and rotationally fixed relative to the steering shaft. The second clutching surface is configured to allow relative rotational movement between such surface and the steering shaft. When unlocked the second clutching surface rotates with the first clutching surface and steering shaft due to friction. When locked, the rotational position of the second clutching surface is fixed so as not to rotate with the first clutching surface and steering shaft. The friction must be overcome for the steering shaft to rotate. The friction can be overcome by application of sufficient external torque at the steering wheel. A controller controls locking and unlocking.

  • Patent number: 5435785
Abstract: An elastic coupling unit is arranged on an element of a motion transmission assembly. The motion transmission assembly includes at least one cardan joint on one extremity and an input plate and an output plate between which an elastic member is located. The elastic member and the annular face portions of each of the input and output plates are concave in shape so that the elastic member works together with the annular face portion of each plate. The concavity center of these various portions matches the conical rotation center of the assembly and is located on the output plate side of the center.
