  • Publication number: 20120213260
Abstract: In a novel apparatus for and method of discrete spurious frequency leakage cancellation a radio frequency RF switch is used to couple the upstream path signal to the CATV cable only during transmission bursts. In between transmission bursts, the upstream signal is disconnected from the CATV cable. In a circuit for canceling frequency spurs from a victim signal, a radio frequency (RF) switch is operative to connect and disconnect the victim signal to/from the output in accordance with a switch control signal which is generated by a switch control module. The victim signal is coupled to said RF switch output during transmission bursts only.

  • Patent number: 7957296
Abstract: A novel apparatus and method of detecting loss of signal events in RF cable. The loss of signal may be caused malicious cable cuts, inadvertent disconnects, loss of signal from the cable head-end or for any other reason. The invention is particular applicable to use in cable modems which provide cable service, Internet service and telephone service to subscriber premises including both homes and businesses. All RF channels are scanned and the signal power of each is measured and compared to a threshold. If the signal power on all channels is below the threshold, then it is concluded that a “cable signal loss” event has occurred. The telephone line originating in the cable modem is shut down which causes the alarm system connected thereto to generate an alert.

  • Publication number: 20100266000
Abstract: A novel apparatus for and method of discrete spurious frequency leakage cancellation for use in a cable modem. The spurious leakage cancellation mechanism is particularly suitable for use in cable modem systems adapted to implement the DOCSIS 2.0 specification which specifies both downstream and upstream channels. In one embodiment, the spurious emission cancellation mechanism cancels the spurious emissions by first creating a replica of the aggressor clock signal having the same amplitude but 180 degree phase shift as the spurious signal. The phase shifted spurious replica is added to the original spurious signal thus cancelling the spurious signal. In another embodiment, an RF switch is used to couple the upstream path signal to the CATV cable only during transmission bursts. In between transmission bursts, the upstream signal is disconnected from the CATV cable. This embodiment takes advantage of the less stringent spurious requirements in the DOCSIS 2.0 specification for transmission bursts.

  • Publication number: 20100061432
Abstract: A novel reduced cost CATV RF tuner circuit that can serve as a replacement circuit for one based on a surface acoustic wave (SAW) filter. The tuner circuit is particularly suitable for use in cable modem systems adapted to implement the DOCSIS 2.0 specification which specifies single channel video reception. The invention replaces the traditional SAW filter functions of image rejection and channel selection with both analog and digital components and circuits. The image rejection function is performed by a combination of analog multiple filters. Digital filtering is then used to perform the channel selection operation. The analog based image reject filter can be constructed using relatively inexpensive passive components, while the digital channel selection filter can be implemented in software, firmware, gate array (FPGA) or ASIC.

  • Publication number: 20090190638
Abstract: Embodiments of the invention provide a method for auto calibration with fix and stable power wide band noise at the cable modem input without any need to change input power by using PHY back-off variation at the ADC input. The wide band tuner's IF VGA calibration is accomplished by freezing RF agcs at specific state and back off variation of the ADC input.

  • Publication number: 20090133083
Abstract: A novel passive circuit for providing improved common mode rejection of a differential amplifier novel. The passive circuit functions to compensate for amplitude mismatches between the two outputs of a differential amplifier. To compensate for the amplitude mismatch between the output traces of the amplifier, a resistor is inserted in series with at either one or both of the differential outputs. The values of the resistors are set such that the mismatch is substantially eliminated. Inductors are connected in parallel with the resistors to create a zero ohm path for power. At high frequencies the inductor impedance is sufficiently high that the series resistor compensates for the imbalance caused by spurious products. The imbalance in the amplifier outputs is corrected with the resulting increase in the rejection of spurious frequency products by exploiting the differential common mode rejection (CMR) effect of the differential amplifier.
