    Abstract: The scalpel includes a handle with a blade moveably mounted to it by a leaf spring. A blade protecting sheath is fixably mounted to the handle. In its normal position, the blade is within the sheath such that the cutting edge is protected. In order to expose the cutting edge, the blade is depressed against the force of the spring. When not in use, the blade may be locked within the sheath.
