  • Publication number: 20140313136
Abstract: Described are systems and methods for estimating finger pose of a user during a tactile input event. In one implementation, the system incorporates: a touch-sensitive display device configured to detect a tactile event and to determine a contact point of an object and the touch-sensitive display device, the contact point associated with the tactile event; a camera configured to capture an image of an area proximal to the surface of the touch-sensitive display device; and a central processing unit configured, in response to the detection of the tactile event, to determine information on a pose of the object based on the captured image and the determined contact point.

  • Publication number: 20140313363
Abstract: Described is approach to gesture interaction that is based on user interface widgets. In order to detect user gestures, the widgets are provided with hotspots that are monitored using a camera for predetermined patterns of occlusion. A hotspot is a region where user interacts with the widget by making a gesture over it. The user's gesture may be detected without user physically touching the surface displaying the widget. The aforesaid hotspots are designed to be visually salient and suggestive of the type of gestures that can be received from the user. Described techniques are advantageous in relation to conventional systems, such as systems utilizing finger tracking, in that they can better support complex tasks with repeated user actions. In addition, they provide better perceived affordance than conventional systems that attempt to use widgets that are not designed for gesture input, or in-the-air gesture detection techniques that lack any visual cues.

  • Publication number: 20140313122
Abstract: Described is an approach to enabling gesture interactions for the viewport widget in a graphical user interface (GUI) library. The gesture interactions may include continuous operations such as panning, zooming and rotating of the viewport's content with fingers (or styluses). The approach is based on using a camera to detect occlusion patterns in a sensor grid rendered over the viewport. The sensor grid consists of sensor blobs, which are small blobs of pixels with a distinct color. A sensor blob is aware of its location in both the viewport's coordinate system and the camera's coordinate system, and triggers an occlusion event at the location when it is occluded by a finger (or stylus). Robust techniques are devised to eliminate unintentional gestures, provide visual guidance and feedback for interactions, and minimize the visual interference of the sensor grid with the viewport's content.

  • Publication number: 20140181373
Abstract: A persistent storage device includes both persistent storage, which includes a set of persistent storage blocks, and NVRAM, and in particular a set of NVRAM blocks. The persistent storage device also typically includes a storage controller. The persistent storage device, in addition to responding to commands to write data directly to and to read data directly from persistent storage blocks is also configured to write data to specified NVRAM blocks (e.g., specified by a host NVRAM write command) and to transfer data from a specified NVRAM block to a specified persistent storage block. As a result, multiple writes to a particular persistent storage block can be replaced with multiple writes to an NVRAM block and a subsequent single write to the particular persistent storage block. This reduces the number of writes to persistent storage and also reduces the number of corresponding block erase operations.

  • Patent number: 8749587
Abstract: Described is a technique for viewing a document page on a small display such as a mobile phone or PDA. The page can come from a scanned document (bitmap image) or an electronic document (text and graphics data plus metadata). The page with text and graphics is segmented into regions. For each region, a scale-distortion function is constructed based on image analysis. During interactive viewing of the document, as the user navigates by moving the viewport around the page, the zoom factor will be automatically adjusted by optimizing the scale-distortion functions of the regions in the viewport.

  • Patent number: 8634644
Abstract: A system and method to identify pictures in documents. An image representing a page of a document is received. The image is analyzed to identify text objects in the page. A masked image is generated by masking out regions of the image including the text objects in the page. Groups of pixels in the masked image are identified, wherein a respective group of pixels corresponds to at least one picture in the page. When there is one or more groups of pixels, regions for pictures are identified based on the one or more groups of pixels. Metadata tags for the pictures are stored, wherein a respective metadata tag for a respective picture includes information about a respective bounding box for the respective picture.

Keyphrases are displayed with information about the location of the phrase in the document and are used as pointers to quickly move to from overview to section of potential interest. In another implementation, when there are many documents in a collection, inventive multi-document view can be used to reduce number of documents presented, helping user to more efficiently find documents of interest. In this view, a user (possibly repeatedly) filters documents displayed based on metadata values. In one implementation, icons corresponding to documents are displayed on a display device together with metadata corresponding to the documents. When the value of the metadata is selected by the user, display state of the icons corresponding to document is varied based on selected value of metadata.

  • Patent number: 8144919
Abstract: The present invention relates to a method to make effective use of non rectangular display space for displaying a collage. In an embodiment of the invention, a heterogeneous set of images can be arranged to display the region of interest of the images to avoid overlapping regions of interest. The background gaps between the regions of interest can be filled by extending the regions of interest using a Voronoi technique. This produces a stained glass effect for the collage. In an embodiment of the present invention, the technique can be applied to irregular shapes including circular shapes with a hole in the middle. In an embodiment of the present invention, the technique can be used to print labels for disks.

  • Patent number: 8139860
Abstract: In an embodiment of the invention, an electronic document (e-document) can be searched and found by capturing an image of the printed document. Instead of typing in a file name or searching through multiple directories, the user simply takes a picture of the document with a camera and the system uses the document image to locate the e-document. In an alternative embodiment of the invention, an image of a printed document can be useful for remote document sharing. In various embodiments of the invention, sharing an image of a printed document can be used to email a high quality paper document, send a high quality fax, or open a document to a page containing an annotation. Through co-design of the feature extraction and search algorithm in the system, the image feature detection robustness and search speed are improved at the same time.

  • Patent number: 8046701
Abstract: A peer-to-peer modular presentation system is disclosed for providing improved presentations. The system includes a plurality of displays. Each display is associated with an input device, processor and input/output port. The plurality of displays may include static or mobile wherein each display is aware of the displays immediately surrounding it or of the displays in a remote site during a teleconference. A propagation direction may be configured for at least two of the displays in the system. Propagation may be initiated for multiple displays by generating a gesture input at one display. The gesture input will cause content to be presented in the particular display, and initiate propagation of content along the configured direction in neighboring displays. Content may be fed to a particular display through a stack or other memory that is associated with the display.
