Patent number: 10848863Abstract: One or more embodiments of the present disclosure utilize two distinctly different radiation devices aimed in the same direction to create a derived acoustic radiation pattern. The radiation devices may be distinctly different in terms of the acoustic radiation pattern each radiation device generates individually. The derived acoustic radiation pattern is unique to the individual acoustic radiation patterns of either of the two radiation devices. Manipulation of several key design variables allows a multitude of unique patterns to be derived in this way using only the two radiation devices. In turn, this allows for engineering an acoustic radiation pattern to match the unique geometry of a room.Type: GrantFiled: January 13, 2017Date of Patent: November 24, 2020Assignee: HARMAN INTERNATIONAL INDUSTRIES, INCORPORATEDInventor: Paul Wayne Peace, Jr.

Publication number: 20200236459Abstract: One or more embodiments of the present disclosure relate to a two-way loudspeaker design that forces a condensed geometry between low frequency (LF) and high frequency (HF) drivers and then “floats” a midrange waveguide in front of the LF driver. This is a hybrid design meant to benefit from the close proximity of acoustic centers without introducing a central axis obstruction for the LF driver. In addition, the LF and HF waveguides and associated acoustic elements are used to redirect very low frequency energy not supported adequately by the LF waveguide to exit freely using other paths.Type: ApplicationFiled: March 31, 2020Publication date: July 23, 2020Inventors: Paul Wayne PEACE, JR., Derrick RODGERS

Patent number: 10623840Abstract: Embodiments are disclosed for a loudspeaker for producing directed acoustic vibrations. In some embodiments, a loudspeaker includes an electromagnetic transducer including a diaphragm configured to generate acoustic vibrations. The loudspeaker may further include an aperture frame positioned in front of the diaphragm in a direction of propagation of the acoustic vibrations, the aperture frame covering only a portion of a radiating surface of the diaphragm and having a shape that corresponds to the contours of the diaphragm.Type: GrantFiled: March 12, 2018Date of Patent: April 14, 2020Assignee: Harman International Industries, IncorporatedInventor: Paul Wayne Peace, Jr.

Patent number: 10516963Abstract: Techniques are disclosed for an audiovisual system having a display screen that is solid and/or otherwise non-transparent to sound. The sound output from a loudspeaker is oriented to intersect with a portion of the display screen, and a reflection of the sound off of the display screen is directed toward a viewing position in the audiovisual system. Further signal processing techniques to generate sound for output by a loudspeaker oriented at the display screen and other loudspeakers are disclosed. Additionally, other signal processing and control techniques are disclosed that affect audio and video output in the audiovisual system.Type: GrantFiled: January 18, 2018Date of Patent: December 24, 2019Assignee: HARMAN INTERNATIONAL INDUSTRIES, INCORPORATEDInventor: Paul Wayne Peace, Jr.

Patent number: 10440465Abstract: A surface mounted loudspeaker design is provided that mitigates the interference between direct low frequency (LF) energy and reflected LF energy by breaking the LF energy from an LF driver into multiple paths using one or more of waveguides, driver load plates, and enclosure ports to diffuse the reflected energy and minimize frequency response errors. One or more embodiments of the present disclosure provides a loudspeaker have multiple acoustic exits strategically designed and located to generate, for example, three major wave front arrivals—2 source and 1 reflection—at target angles with favorable lag times, mitigating the cancellation notching and frequency errors that occur in conventional loudspeaker designs.Type: GrantFiled: January 16, 2017Date of Patent: October 8, 2019Assignee: HARMAN INTERNATIONAL INDUSTRIES, INCORPORATEDInventors: Paul Wayne Peace, Jr., Derrick Rodgers

Patent number: 10356512Abstract: A loudspeaker may include a full-range waveguide for creating a unified wavefront. The waveguide may include a plurality of entrances, which may be positioned at a first axial end. The waveguide may include a mouth disposed at a second axial end opposite the plurality of entrances. A contoured surface extending between the entrance and the mouth defines a cavity within the waveguide. The contoured surface may include a first pair of walls positioned opposite one another and a second pair of walls positioned opposite one another. The waveguide may include at least one integrator disposed in the cavity between two adjacent entrances. Each integrator may extend transversely between the first pair of walls and may taper towards the mouth to form a pointed edge extending between the first pair of walls. A pair of integrator surfaces each include a solid portion and a perforated portion.Type: GrantFiled: January 12, 2018Date of Patent: July 16, 2019Assignee: Harman International Industries, IncorporatedInventor: Paul Wayne Peace, Jr.
