The amount of non-volatile memory cells that have not experienced programming since the last erase process is determined as a function of current measured in the non-volatile memory apparatus. To take into account changes to the non-volatile memory over time, the current value used to determine the amount of non-volatile memory cells that have not experienced programming since the last erase process is offset based on a number of program/erase cycles experienced.
