Abstract: Methods and an arrangement for synchronizing communication of framed data via asynchronous base stations (BS1, BS2) in a cellular communication system are presented. The synchronization methods are performed continuously by sending out certain system frame counter states from a central node in the system to all its connected base stations (BS1, BS2). Each base station (BS1, BS2) includes a local frame counter (LFCBS1, LFCBS2), which generates local frame counter states (t1(1)-t1(4), t2(1)-t2(4)) correlated to the system frame counter states. Transmission of information via the base stations (BS1, BS2) is synchronized by assigning each data frame (DR(1)-DR(4)) a particular frame number, which is given by the local frame counter states (t1(1)-t1(4), t2(1)-t2(4)), so that data framed (DF(1)-DF(4)) having identical numbers contain copies of a certain data packet.

Abstract: In connection with a diversity handling moveover procedure for a cellular system having soft handover, allocation of a replacement diversity handling unit in a target node occurs only after a moveover decision has been made by a source node. Initially, an original or source diversity handling unit at the source node performs connection combining and connection splitting functions for legs of a mobile connection routed through plural base stations serving a mobile station. In accordance with movement of the mobile station, the source node makes the movement decision. The moveover decision can be based on factors such as base station utilization and/or actual and/or predicted directional movement of the mobile station. In some embodiments, the diversity handling moveover procedure involves selection among plural nodes for situs of the replacement or target diversity handling unit.

Abstract: An improved system and method for wireless data transmission across a variety of telecommunications services operating under a variety of standards is disclosed. The system and method operate by separating the call and connection control in mobile access, providing a generic call control mechanism offering uniformity in communications and allowing a separate connection control mechanism to handle the physical and virtual channel connections.
