Patent number: 8583143Abstract: A communication network includes a wireless network, a location platform, and a network component. The wireless network includes a base station to send data to and receive data from a mobile station via radio frequency communication signals. The location platform is operably coupled to the wireless network. In one embodiment, the location platform computes a velocity of the mobile station in response to a velocity request. The network component is operably coupled between the wireless network and the location platform. In one embodiment, the network component compares the computed velocity of the mobile station with a velocity threshold in response to an attempted communication involving the mobile station. The network component also implements a restrictive action for the attempted communication involving the mobile station in response to a determination that the computed velocity exceeds the velocity threshold.Type: GrantFiled: August 6, 2009Date of Patent: November 12, 2013Assignee: Unwired Planet, LLCInventors: Peter Hartmaier, William Thomas Cooper, Utpal Thakrar

Publication number: 20120166336Abstract: A system and method for replenishing prepaid account balances is disclosed. Consumers are issued a prepaid account card similar to a credit card. Funds are added to prepaid accounts at retail locations by providing cash or equivalent to a clerk along with the prepaid account card. The clerk swipes the prepaid account card in an authorization terminal and rings up the transaction in a manner similar to a normal credit card transaction. The transaction is transmitted to a bank which processes the transaction and notifies a replenishment system that the customer has added value to the prepaid account. The replenishment system provides the customer with a confirmation number associated with the transaction. The replenishment system notifies a prepaid engine for the prepaid account. The prepaid engine updates the user's prepaid account balance, thereby making funds available for future purchases by the user.Type: ApplicationFiled: December 6, 2011Publication date: June 28, 2012Inventor: Peter Hartmaier

Patent number: 7359720Abstract: A system and method of for exchanging information between a wireless network and an external system is disclosed. The wireless network detects trigger events related to communications with wireless subscribers. Certain event triggers cause the wireless system to create a message to send to the external system. In response the external system may send information to the wireless system. The wireless system may create messages upon detection of handoff, origination, status, registration or other activity by the wireless subscriber. The invention may also detect trigger events related one mass media broadcasts. An interface translates between the different protocols of the wireless and the external or wireline networks to allow for automatic call redirection. The application can be utilized between many networks and facilitates the utilization of the architecture of a wirelined network and the home location register of the wireless network for various applications on the wireless network.Type: GrantFiled: October 8, 2001Date of Patent: April 15, 2008Assignee: Openwave Systems Inc.Inventors: Peter Hartmaier, William E. Gossman

Publication number: 20050074028Abstract: A system and method for accessing resources comprising entering a code on a mobile device, and launching a browser on the mobile device in response to the activation of a web button on the mobile device, wherein the code is automatically used as a resource identifier when the browser launches. A system and method for establishing a data session for a mobile device comprising receiving a request to establish the data session, wherein the request includes a resource identifier code that is an invalid resource identifier, converting the resource identifier code to a valid resource identifier, and establishing the data session between the mobile device and a resource associated with the valid resource identifier.Type: ApplicationFiled: October 2, 2003Publication date: April 7, 2005Applicant: Openwave System Inc.Inventors: Theodore Wugofski, Peter Hartmaier, Fergus Wills

Publication number: 20020111153Abstract: A pre-paid subscriber account system for use with wireless telephone systems is disclosed. The system, which monitors a subscriber's call, deducts the cost of the call from the subscriber's pre-paid account in real-time, warns the subscriber during a call when the account is nearing depletion, and terminates the call when the account is depleted. The system can also prevent the initiation of a new call when the account is depleted. The system and method uses signaling techniques that will allow the metering or billing of the call, along with any authorization or restrictions, to be done remotely from the actual switching of the call. Call events or chargeable events are transmitted to the pre-paid control system while the communications path of the call is held at the switching system awaiting control information.Type: ApplicationFiled: April 15, 2002Publication date: August 15, 2002Inventors: Peter Hartmaier, Michael T. Wilhoite

Publication number: 20020080751Abstract: A wireless user makes a call to another member of a closed group of users by dialing a code. The Service Control Point (SCP) looks up the number corresponding to the called party and verifies if the called party's wireless device is powered on. If the called party's wireless is powered on and not busy, the call is completed to the active wireless device. If the wireless device is unreachable, the call will be forwarded to another wireline or wireless device as determined by the SCP in communication with the Home Location Register (HLR).Type: ApplicationFiled: January 13, 1999Publication date: June 27, 2002Inventor: PETER HARTMAIER

Patent number: 6393269Abstract: A pre-paid subscriber account system for use with wireless telephone systems is disclosed. Various options can also apply different charging rates, can charge only when specified criteria are met, or can charge only for calls to/from specified areas or telephone numbers. The system and method uses signaling techniques that will allow the metering or billing of the call, along with any authorization or restrictions, to be done remotely from the actual switching of the call.
