    Abstract: Described herein are various methods and apparatuses for delivering stents or conduits and other devices into the myocardium of a patient. One preferred stent delivery system provides access to the insertion site in the myocardium by advancing a delivery catheter through a blockage in a coronary artery, or around the blockage through a coronary vein or through a channel or tunnel formed around the blockage. In one embodiment, once the distal end of the delivery catheter is adjacent the myocardium, an angled bend is created in the catheter by actuating expandable steering guides mounted to the catheter which cooperate with the walls of the blood vessel to cause the catheter to turn. Then, a guidewire is advanced through the delivery catheter and into the myocardium. In another embodiment, a tip-deflecting pull wire extends from the distal end of the delivery catheter which may be actuated to turn towards and then inserted into the myocardium.

    Abstract: A medical system incorporates a perforated flexible web conformable to a patient, at least one electroacoustic transducer attached to the web, an a-c current source being operatively connected to the transducer for energizing the transducer with an electrical signal of a pre-established ultrasonic frequency to produce a first pressure wave. At least one acoustoelectric transducer is attached to the web, while an analyzing component is operatively connected to the acoustoelectric transducer for determining three-dimensional shapes of internal organs of the patient by analyzing signals generated by the acoustoelectric transducer in response to second pressure waves produced at internal organs of the patient in response to the first pressure wave. An image of internal organic structures derived through the ultrasonic signal analysis is displayed on a video monitor for enabling direct observation of invasive diagnostic and therapeutic operations.

    Abstract: Described herein is a catheter system for delivering an L-shaped conduit into the body of a patient between the left ventricle and coronary artery. A shunt preferably made of semirigid material is inserted into the lumen of a delivery catheter. The delivery catheter is advanced within the patient until its distal end is located adjacent to the desired insertion site, which is preferably the junction between a coronary artery and passageway formed in the myocardium between the left ventricle and coronary artery. A proximal section of the shunt is first advanced out of the delivery catheter into the myocardial passageway. A distal section of the shunt is advanced into the coronary artery, preferably by advancing the distal section of the shunt into the myocardial passageway and then pulling the distal section back into the coronary artery, or by pushing the distal section of the shunt in a folded configuration out of the delivery catheter into the coronary artery.

The conduit is adapted to be positioned in the myocardium or heart wall to provide a passage for blood to flow between a chamber of the heart such as the left ventricle and the coronary artery, distal to the blockage. The stent is self-expanding or uses a balloon to expand the stent in the heart wall. Various attachment means are provided to anchor the stent and prevent its migration.

    Abstract: A surgical staple, particularly but not exclusively for use in endoscopic surgery, includes a first leg, a second leg, and a hinge portion joining the first leg and the second leg to one another. A spring element is connected between the first leg and the second leg biases the staple in a closed postfiring configuration. The staple is temporarily disposed in an open prefiring configuration in an access tube by a stalk holding the legs of the staple apart. A stapling operation includes manipulating the stalk to affix the staple to a soft substrate, and subsequently withdrawing the stalk to release the staple and allow the spring element to develop closing force in the legs. The spring element may be integral with the legs or a separate element connected thereto.

The balloon is inserted onto an intrapericardial space about a patient's heart and is disposed about one portion of the patient's heart. The method further includes inflating the balloon in the intrapericardial space to compress one portion of the patient's heart. A lower end portion of the patient's heart is separately compressed by an additional instrumentality to reduce ventricular volume.

    Abstract: Disclosed is a conduit that provides a bypass around an occlusion or stenosis in a coronary artery. The conduit is a tube adapted to be positioned in the heart wall to provide a passage for blood to flow between a heart chamber and a coronary artery, at a site distal to the occlusion or stenosis. The conduit has a section of blood vessel attached to its interior lumen which preferably includes at least one naturally occurring one-way valve positioned therein. The valve prevents the backflow of blood from the coronary artery into the heart chamber.

    Abstract: Improved methods of treatment of diseased or occluded vascular grafts in patients having undergone coronary artery bypass or other bypass surgery are disclosed. Deployment of a conduit in the myocardium at a site distal to the site of attachment of the coronary artery bypass graft allows oxygenated blood to flow from a chamber in the heart directly into the coronary artery, bypassing blockages in the coronary artery and the graft originally used to bypass the coronary artery. To ensure proper positioning, the conduit is delivered through the graft to the myocardium. A new lining for the existing vein graft and methods of delivery are also disclosed.

    Abstract: In a sterilization method a plethora of magnetizable metal particles are deposited into a uterus of a living female organism. Subsequently, a magnet is placed near an external skin surface of the female organism near the uterus to thereby cause at least some of the metal particles to embed in a myometrium or endometrium of the uterus. The metal particles may be magnetized prior to deposition in the uterus. The particles are advantageously formed to have a sharp end which easily penetrates into the uterine lining. Each particle is magnetized so that the sharp end has a predetermined magnetic pole, whereby a magnet with the opposite pole placed against the organism results in an embedding of the sharp end in the uterine lining. In addition, microwave radiation is optionally transmitted into the female organism in a region about the uterus after the embedding of the metal particles in the myometrium or endometrium.

    Abstract: An insert for a frying pan is designed to provide a warming or holding function to an existing cooking function for a conventional frying pan. An insert consists of a segment of material of an appropriate thermal conductance shaped to fit against an edge or lip of a conventional pan of a given diameter. The segment is covered with a non-stick surface to protect an existing pan cooking surface and provide the usual benefits of non-stick food preparation surfaces. The insert is provided with a combined handle and clip for attachment to a side wall of an existing pan, and easy removal of a heated insert covered with prepared foodstuff.

    Abstract: A machine for making a food product includes a cooking apparatus for cooking an aliquot of dough disposed in a predetermined shape about a cooking member made of a material which has a chemical composition essentially impervious to cooking temperatures. The machine also incorporates a mechanism for extracting the cooking member from the cooked dough, thereby creating a chamber in the cooked dough. This mechanism has a gripper which is disposable in grasping contact with a protruding end of the cooking member, a holder disposable in contact with the cooked dough for restraining the cooked dough, and a motive component operatively connected to at least one of the holder and the gripper for moving the one of the holder and the gripper relative to the other to remove the cooking member from cooked dough.

    Abstract: A method for use in laparoscopic hernia repair comprises the steps of inserting a distal end of a laparoscope through a patient's abdominal muscles to a point outside of the parietal peritoneum, and inserting through the abdominal muscles a distal end of an elongate instrument provided at that distal end with a balloon in a collapsed configuration, the balloon being transparent to optical radiation. Upon disposition of the balloon between the abdominal muscles and the peritoneum, the balloon is inflated and the instrument is subsequently manipulated from outside the patient to push the inflated balloon against connective tissues between the abdominal muscles and the peritoneum to shift the tissues to form a pre-peritoneal space. During the manipulation of the instrument with the balloon, the laparoscope is to view, through and around the inflated balloon, the connective tissues and other organic structures.

The wave preprocessor is programmed to derive preliminary structural data pertaining to the internal tissues of the patient, where the data consists essentially of separate sets of data, each set corresponding to a respective location of the probe relative to the patient.
