  • Patent number: 5927540
Abstract: The present invention provides apparatus and methods for dispensing articles. In one exemplary embodiment, an apparatus comprises a cabinet defining an enclosure and at least one drawer is attached to the cabinet. The drawer slides in and out of the cabinet and contains an array of compartments. At least one lid is provided and is configured to slide back and forth with respect to the drawer. Each drawer further includes a distance sensor for detecting the distance traveled by the lid relative to the drawer. A controller is placed in communication with both the locking mechanism and the distance sensor. The controller sends a signal to actuate the locking mechanism after the lid has been moved to expose a desired compartment. In this manner, the lid can be moved to allow access to a compartment containing a desired article or medical supply. The locking mechanism prevents further movement of the lid, thereby preventing access to any additional compartments.

  • Patent number: 5905653
Abstract: The invention provides an exemplary method for dispensing medical supply or pharmaceutical items from a dispensing unit which comprises a processor and a cabinet having a plurality of drawers which are lockable within the cabinet by a locking mechanism. The drawers include a plurality of bins for holding the pharmaceutical or medical supply items, with at least some of the bins having lids equipped with a sensor that communicates with the processor to indicate when the lid is lifted. Further, the processor includes a record of the items held within each drawer and which items may be accessed by specific users or user types. According to the method, user identification information is entered into the processor to identify a user that is requesting access to one of the pharmaceutical or medical supply items held in the dispensing unit.

  • Patent number: 5805456
Abstract: The invention provides improved methods and apparatus for providing access to items to be dispensed and for maintaining an inventory of the items. According to one aspect of the invention, a dispensing unit is provided having an enclosure with an interior. A plurality of storage locations are distributed over a surface of the enclosure. Sensors associated with at least some of the individual storage locations are provided. The unit further includes a multiplicity of receptacles disposed within at least some of the storage locations. Sensors associated with at least some of the individual receptacles are provided. A processor is disposed on the enclosure and connected to receive signals from the storage location-associated sensors and the receptacle-associated sensors.

  • Patent number: 5350101
Abstract: A stock feeder has a housing for supporting both the stock and an advancer which coaxially extends through the housing and is formed as a collet which, when clamped, grips the stock and holds the advancer in a fixed relationship with the stock. At the extreme distal end of the advancer the collet is formed with a radially extending lip, and proximal to the collet the advancer is formed with a radially extending ring. A chuck which is formed with a radial groove slidingly surrounds the collet and is movable relative to the advancer. Specifically, the chuck can be moved on the collet between a first position wherein the chuck clamps the collet onto the stock and a second position wherein the collet is released to allow a sliding movement of the stock through the advancer. In either collet configuration, the stock may be rotated. An actuator is engaged with the groove on the chuck and is manipulable to move the chuck between the first and second positions.
