  • Patent number: 6969334
Abstract: A light-weight transfer case is provided for implementation with a four-wheel drive vehicle. The light-weight transfer case includes a single-piece housing formed through either a lost-foam magnesium or die cast process. First and second output shafts are included which are formed from single-piece tubing through either a hydro-forming or swaging process. The first and second output shafts are lighter weight and maintain increased strength over traditional transfer case output shafts. A gear reduction unit is also included for establishing high, low and neutral speeds of the first and second output shafts. Furthermore, a mode selection device is included for selectively providing drive to either a single output shaft, in a two-wheel drive mode, or both the first and second output shafts, in a four-wheel drive mode.

  • Patent number: 6599213
Abstract: A four-wheel drive transmission is provided which combines a continuously variable transmission unit and a transfer case into a common assembly. The four-wheel drive transmission includes a continuously variable transmission unit, a continuously variable range unit and a torque transfer unit. Variable speed control of a first worm/worm gear transmission drives a component of an epicyclic gearset associated with the continuously variable transmission unit to provide continuous ratio control between an input shaft and an intermediate shaft. Likewise, variable speed control of a second worm/worm gear transmission drives a component of a differential associated with the continuously variable range unit to provide continuous ratio control between the intermediate shaft and a first output shaft. Finally, the torque transfer unit controls the selective/automatic transfer of drive torque from one of the intermediate shaft and the first output shaft to a second output shaft to provide front-wheel drive.

  • Publication number: 20030037976
Abstract: A drive axle adapted for use in hybrid vehicles and having an electric motor and a gearbox packaged within a common housing assembly. The gearbox includes a differential assembly driven by a planetary-type reduction unit. The reduction unit includes a first planetary gearset having a first sun gear driven by the motor, a first ring gear, and a set of first planet gears meshed with the first sun gear and the first ring gear. A first planet carrier is non-rotatably fixed to a stationary number and rotatably supports the first planet gears. A second planet gearset includes a second sun gear fixed for rotation with the first ring gear, a second ring gear non-rotatably fixed to the stationary member, and a set of second planet gears rotatably supported from a second planet carrier and which mesh with the second sun gear and the second ring gear.

  • Patent number: 6514167
Abstract: A four-wheel drive transmission is provided which combines a continuously variable transmission unit and a transfer case into a common assembly. The four-wheel drive transmission includes a continuously variable transmission unit, a drive selector unit and a torque transfer unit. Variable speed control of a worm/worm gear transmission drives a component of a differential associated with the continuously variable transmission unit to provide continuous ratio control between an input shaft and an intermediate shaft. The drive selector units establishes forward and reverse drive connections between the intermediate shaft and a first output shaft. Finally, the torque transfer unit controls the selective/automatic transfer of drive torque from the first output shaft to a second output shaft to provide four-wheel drive operation.
