Patent number: 10259727Abstract: An electrochemical system and method are disclosed for On Site Generation (OSG) of oxidants, such as free available chlorine, mixed oxidants and persulfate. Operation at high current density, using at least a diamond anode, provides for higher current efficiency, extended lifetime operation, and improved cost efficiency. High current density operation, in either a single pass or recycle mode, provides for rapid generation of oxidants, with high current efficiency, which potentially allows for more compact systems. Beneficially, operation in reverse polarity for a short cleaning cycle manages scaling, provides for improved efficiency and electrode lifetime and allows for use of impure feedstocks without requiring water softeners. Systems have application for generation of chlorine or other oxidants, including mixed oxidants providing high disinfection rate per unit of oxidant, e.g. for water treatment to remove microorganisms or for degradation of organics in industrial waste water.Type: GrantFiled: August 10, 2018Date of Patent: April 16, 2019Assignee: Advanced Diamond Technologies, Inc.Inventors: Ian Wakefield Wylie, Prabhu U. Arumugam, Hongjun Zeng, John Arthur Carlisle

Patent number: 9228972Abstract: A diamond electrode and a diamond microelectrode array for biosensors and electroanalytical applications, such as electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), are disclosed. The electrode comprises a layer of ultra-smooth conductive nanocrystalline diamond (NCD) having a resistivity of >0.05 ?cm and a surface roughness of <20 nm Ra. Preferably, the diamond layer comprises boron or nitrogen-doped ultrananocrystalline diamond (UNCD) having an average grain size <10 nm and a surface roughness <10 nm Ra. It may be patterned to define a microelectrode array with a plurality of individually addressable electrodes, each having a diameter in the range from 100 nm to 100 ?m. The surface of each microelectrode is hydrogen-terminated before bio-functionalization, i.e. modifying with sensing molecules for detection of a specific biological or chemical target and coating with a blocker for reducing non-specific binding.Type: GrantFiled: February 22, 2013Date of Patent: January 5, 2016Assignee: Advanced Diamond Technologies, Inc.Inventors: Prabhu U. Publication number: 20150250421Abstract: Conductive diamond micro-electrode sensors and sensor arrays are disclosed for in vivo chemical sensing. Also provided is a method of fabrication of individual sensors and sensor arrays. Reliable, sensitive and selective chemical micro-sensors may be constructed for real-time, continuous monitoring of neurotransmitters and neuro-active substances in vivo. Each sensor comprises a conductive microwire, having a distal end comprising a tip, coated with nanocrystalline or ultrananocrystalline conductive diamond, and an overlying insulating layer. Active sensor areas of the conductive diamond layer are defined by openings in the insulating layer at the distal end. Multiple sensor areas may be defined by a 2 or 3 dimensional pattern of openings near the tip. This structure limits interference from surrounding areas for improved signal to noise ratio, sensitivity and selectivity.Type: ApplicationFiled: September 26, 2013Publication date: September 10, 2015Inventors: Prabhu U. Patent number: 7635420Abstract: A method for concentrating or partly separating particles of a selected species from a liquid or fluid containing these particles and flowing in a channel, and for determining if the selected species particle is present in the liquid or fluid. A time varying electrical field E, having a root-mean-square intensity E2rms with a non-zero gradient in a direction transverse to the liquid or fluid flow direction, is produced by a nanostructure electrode array, with a very high magnitude gradient near exposed electrode tips. A dielectrophoresis force causes the selected particles to accumulate near the electrode tips, if the medium and selected particles have substantially different dielectric constants. An insulating material surrounds most of each of the nanostructure electrodes, and a region of the insulating material surface is functionalized to promote attachment of the selected species particles to the surface.Type: GrantFiled: November 21, 2006Date of Patent: December 22, 2009Assignee: The United States of America as represented by the Administrator of the National Aeronautics and Space AdministrationInventors: Jun Li, Alan M. Patent number: 7572355Abstract: Devices and methods of enhancing mass transport proximate a surface of an electrode immersed in a liquid are disclosed. One aspect of the device comprises an electrode embedded in a sintered or bonded magnetic material. The device is contacted with a solvent containing a redox material dissolved therein. An external voltage or current is applied to the electrode, which external voltage or current is sufficient to enhance mass transport proximate the surface of the electrode. Magnetic field effects can be effectively applied to the microstirring of fluids in conjunction with microelectrochemical systems in a lab-on-a-chip format. Suitable applications include bioassays, drug discovery, and high throughput screening, and other applications where magnetohydrodynamics can enhance chemical detection and/or reagent mixing, which otherwise rely on diffusional processes.Type: GrantFiled: January 7, 2005Date of Patent: August 11, 2009Assignee: Board of Trustees of the University of ArkansasInventors: Prabhu U. Patent number: 7467928Abstract: Microfluidic channels utilizing magnetohydrodynamics are used to pump very small volumes of solution. The channels have electrodes along the walls and a current carrying species within a solution carries current through the solution. The combination of the electric and magnetic fields causes the solution to flow through the channel.Type: GrantFiled: December 11, 2006Date of Patent: December 23, 2008Assignee: Board of Trustees of the University of ArkansasInventors: Eyitayo S.
