Publication number: 20190102094Abstract: Systems and methods for storage pruning can enable users to delete, edit, or copy backed up data that matches a pattern. Storage pruning can enable fine-grain deletion or copying of these files from backups stored in secondary storage devices. Systems and methods can also enable editing of metadata associated with backups so that when the backups are restored or browsed, the logical edits to the metadata can then be performed physically on the data to create a custom restore or a custom view. A user may perform operations such as renaming, deleting, modifying flags, and modifying retention policies on backed up items. Although the underlying data in the backup may not change, the view of the backup data when the user browses the backup data can appear to include the user's changes. A restore of the data can cause those changes to be performed on the backup data.Type: ApplicationFiled: November 15, 2018Publication date: April 4, 2019Inventors: Manas Bhikchand MUTHA, Pavan Kumar Reddy BEDADALA, Prosenjit SINHA

Publication number: 20190087280Abstract: An improved content indexing (CI) system is disclosed herein. For example, the improved CI system may include a distributed architecture of client computing devices, media agents, a single backup and CI database, and a pool of servers. After a file backup occurs, the backup and CI database may include file metadata indices and other information associated with backed up files. Servers in the pool of servers may, in parallel, query the backup and CI database for a list of files assigned to the respective server that have not been content indexed. The servers may then request a media agent to restore the assigned files from secondary storage and provide the restored files to the servers. The servers may then content index the received restored files. Once the content indexing is complete, the servers can send the content index information to the backup and CI database for storage.Type: ApplicationFiled: September 13, 2018Publication date: March 21, 2019Inventors: Sanath KUMAR, Sri Karthik BHAGI, Parag GOKHALE, Rahul S. Publication number: 20190087281Abstract: An improved content indexing system is disclosed herein that content indexing system combines the functionality of the backup metadata database and the content index database into a single backup and content index database to avoid the need to perform synchronization operations. By using a single backup and content index database, the content indexing system also reduces the computing performance costs that would be associated with the synchronization operations as the amount of indexed content increases, thereby solving scalability issues.Type: ApplicationFiled: September 13, 2018Publication date: March 21, 2019Inventors: Sanath KUMAR, Sri Karthik BHAGI, Parag GOKHALE, Rahul S. Patent number: 10126977Abstract: Disclosed methods and systems leverage resources in a storage management system to partially synchronize primary data files based on synchronizing selected portions thereof without regard to changes that may be occurring in other non-synchronized portions. Accordingly, a number of primary data files may be partially synchronized by synchronizing designated portions thereof via auto-restore operations from backup data. This approach relies on storage management resources to designate portions of source data that is to be kept synchronized across any number of targets; detect changes to the designated portions; back up changes to secondary storage; and distribute the changes from secondary storage to the associated targets, with minimal impact to the primary data environment. The approach may be mutually applied, so that changes in any one of an associated group of source data files may be likewise detected, backed up, and distributed to the other members of the group.Type: GrantFiled: February 9, 2018Date of Patent: November 13, 2018Assignee: Commvault Systems, Inc.Inventor: Prosenjit Sinha

Publication number: 20180285382Abstract: An information management system is provided herein that combines data backup and data migration operations such that data appears available in a network-accessible folder when in fact the data is stored as a secondary copy in a secondary storage device. For example, a user can indicate that a first file should be added to the network-accessible folder. A client computing device can transmit the first file to a secondary storage computing device that performs a backup operation to store a backup copy of the first file in the secondary storage device. The secondary storage computing device can also generate an index of the first file, which includes a location of the backup copy of the first file, and transmit the index to a server that manages the network-accessible folder. Thus, the backup copy of the first file can be retrieved if the first file is selected via the network-accessible folder.Type: ApplicationFiled: March 27, 2018Publication date: October 4, 2018Inventors: Bhavyan Bharatkumar MEHTA, Parag GOKHALE, Sri Karthik BHAGI, Prosenjit SINHA, Manoj Kumar PRADHAN

Publication number: 20180270290Abstract: A method and system for remotely executing commands at a client computing device. The method comprises receiving a selection of commands to transmit to a group of client computing devices via a webserver. The group of client computing devices, as well as the selected commands, are associated with a group identifier. The method validates access privileges of the administrator to transmit the selected commands to the group of client computing devices. Upon receipt of the selected commands, the webserver transmits the selected commands to at least one registered proxy server. The registered proxy server then determines one or more client identifiers associated with the group identifier. Each client identifier is assigned to a client computing device. Upon receipt of the selected commands, the registered proxy server transmits the selected commands to client computing devices in the group of client computing devices matching the determined client identifiers.Type: ApplicationFiled: March 13, 2018Publication date: September 20, 2018Inventors: Prosenjit Sinha, Sangeetha Janakiraman, Arun Prasad Amarendran, Tirthankar Chatterjee

Publication number: 20180225177Abstract: A method and system for migrating data and metadata from a first backup system to a second backup system via a content staging system is disclosed. The system accesses the backup data from the first backup system and restores it, along with the associated metadata, to a staging system. A metadata file is created at the staging system which comprises of the metadata that is to be migrated to the second backup system. The system then migrates the data from the staging system to the second backup system. The metadata is also migrated to the second backup system in a format such that it can be indexed. As a result, the migrated data can be browsed and searched based on one or more search criteria based on the associated metadata. Other details are provided herein.Type: ApplicationFiled: February 5, 2018Publication date: August 9, 2018Inventors: Sri Karthik Bhagi, Prosenjit Sinha
