  • Patent number: 7734144
Abstract: A method and apparatus for editing a source video that has already been taken to stabilize images in the video. To eliminate jerky motion from a video, changes in shots are first detected. Then, any jerkiness within the video of that shot is classified and the video is segmented further into smaller segments based on this classification. The jerkiness within the selected segments is removed. The corrected shot, comprising a plurality of frames, is then added to the preceding shot until all shots of the video have been appropriately corrected for jerkiness. To help the user identify the shots being edited, keyframes or snapshots of the shots are displayed, thereby allowing the user to decide whether processing of the shot is desired and which shots should be incorporated into the final video.

  • Patent number: 7046914
Abstract: For use in a multimedia analysis system capable of analyzing the content of multimedia signals, there is disclosed an apparatus and method for creating a multimedia table of contents of videotaped material. In one advantageous embodiment, the apparatus of the present invention comprises a multimedia table of contents controller that is capable of receiving video signals, audio signals, and text signals of said videotaped material, and capable of combining portions of the video signals, audio signals, and text signals to create a table of contents of the videotaped material. The controller is capable of segmenting video signals with both a coarse and fine segmentation application. The controller is also capable of locating boundaries of elements of the videotaped material with both a coarse and fine boundary detection application. An index module of the controller links elements of the table of contents with combinations of audio, visual, and transcript cues.

  • Patent number: 6917692
Abstract: A semi-automatic method of tracking color objects in a video image sequence starts by separating the objects on the basis of color and identifying an object of interest to track. A Kalman predictive algotithm in used to predict the position of the centroid of the object of interest through successive frames. From the predicted position the actual centroid is measured and the position and velocity are smoothed using a Kalman filter. Error recovery is provided in the event the centroid falls outside the field of view or falls into an area of a different color, or in the event the tracking algorithm breaks down.

  • Patent number: 6859803
Abstract: An apparatus and method for conducting exclusive and inclusive metadata searches to identify and select multimedia programs. The apparatus of the invention including a metadata search controller that compares user specified search words with metadata words to find programs that meet user specified search criteria. The metadata search controller executes an inclusive metadata search to search for matches between a user specified search word and a metadata word that is related to the user specified search word in a word pair contained within a word pair database. The metadata search controller calculates a rank value for each program that is found by a metadata search and creates a ranked list of such programs.

  • Patent number: 6810144
Abstract: A method of and system for detecting a cartoon in a video stream are provided. The system comprises a storage device for storing the encoded signal and a processor for processing low parameter information extracted from the encoded video signal. The information is extracted based on the predetermined characteristics of a typical cartoon. At least one value is computed based on the low parameter information and it is compared to the predetermined values for natural video. Based on the comparison the determination is made whether the video sequence contains a cartoon.

  • Publication number: 20040165061
Abstract: A method of indexing and searching a video database having a plurality of video shots uses 3-D camera motion parameters. For each video shot the 3-D camera motion parameters are estimated, rates of tracking, booming, dollying, panning, tilting, rolling and zooming are computed, and the results are indexed in a metadata index file in the video database according to the types of camera. The video database is searched by selecting one of the types of camera motion and submitting a query. The query is processed to identify those video shots in the video database that satisfy the query in order of priority. The highest priority video shots are displayed for the user.

  • Publication number: 20030131362
Abstract: Stories are detected in multimedia data composed of concurrent streams for different modes such as audio, video and text and linked to related stories. First, time periods of uniformity in attributes of the streams serve as “building blocks” that are consolidated according to rules that are characteristic of the story to be detected. The attributes are then ranked by their respective reliabilities for detecting the story to be detected. An inter-attribute union of the time periods is cumulated attribute-to-attribute in an order that is based on the ranking. A buffered portion of the multimedia data that is delimited by the starting and ending times is retained in mass storage. The starting and ending times are indexed by characteristics of content of the portion to form a story segment which is maintained in a data structure with links to related story segments.

  • Patent number: 6504569
Abstract: A method of generating a 2-D extended image from a video sequence representing a natural 3-D scene first determines motion parameters for a camera that recorded the scene with respect to a bakcground object from the video sequence using a structure-from-motion algorithm. The motion parameters include a rotation matrix, a translation vector and a depth map representing the depth of each point in the background object from the camera. Next from the motion parameters and depth map the 2-D extended image is generated for the background object as a composition of the images from the video sequence using a plane perspective projection technique. The background object may be layered as a function of depth and flatness criteria to form a set of layered 2-D extended images for the background object from the video sequence.

  • Publication number: 20020159750
Abstract: The present invention is directed to a method of segmenting and indexing video using multi-media cues characteristic of a given genre of program. According to the present invention, these multi-media cues are selected by a multi-media information probability being calculated for each frame of video segments. Each of the video segments is divided into sub-segments. A probability distribution of multi-media information is also calculated for each of the sub-segments using the multi-media information for each frame. The probability distribution for each sub-segments are combined to form a combined probability distribution. Further, the multi-media information having the highest combined probability in the combined probability distribution is selected as the dominant multi-media cues.

  • Patent number: 6243495
Abstract: A method of modifying a group of pictures (GOP) structure in an MPEG video signal from a low-delay mode bitstream having I and P pictures to a non-low-delay bitstream having I, P and B pictures uses the motion vectors from the low-delay mode bitstream to derive the motion vectors for the non-low-delay mode bitstream. Motion vectors for anchor pictures for the non-low-delay mode bitstream are converted from the motion vectors for the corresponding pictures in the low-delay mode bitstream. Motion vectors for the B pictures in the non-low-delay mode bitstream are converted from the motion vectors for the corresponding P pictures in the low-delay mode bitstream. The converted motion vectors for the non-low-delay mode bitstream are used in recoding an uncompressed video signal derived from the low-delay mode bitstream to produce the non-low-delay mode bitstream.
