  • Patent number: 8477864
Abstract: A MIMO transmission scheme is provided which provides some advantages of the Alamouti code but which can be adapted so as to provide enhanced performance for a given amount of antenna correlation. A block of complex scalar input symbols is mapped to a block-code matrix which is transmitted as a spacetime signal matrix from an array of two or more antennas. The block-code matrix is assembled by combining input data with specified dispersion matrices. Each of the dispersion matrices is determined, in part, by an adjustable parameter which relates to a degree of beam-forming behavior by the transmission antenna array.

  • Patent number: 7965665
Abstract: In a UMTS wireless communication system a UE autonomously determines that it is going to transit from an active traffic mode into an idle traffic mode and informs the NodeBs in its active set that it is doing so. It does so either by using Layer 1 signaling, using the uplink DPCCH to send a message to the NodeBs indicating the transition, or by using Layer 2 signaling by via MAC PDUs that contain the message, which are delivered on the uplink E-DPDCH to the NodeBs.

  • Patent number: 7940721
Abstract: An exemplary method of controlling communications that may include enhanced dedicated channel (E-DCH) traffic includes setting a total uplink power limit below an allowable power limit. A minimum amount of uplink resources is allocated to each user requesting E-DCH service on an individual user basis such that a cumulative E-DCH power allocation satisfies a selected minimum E-DCH power allocation threshold. A determination whether to grant a non-E-DCH service request is made based upon a relationship between the current total uplink power and the total uplink power limit and a relationship between the selected minimum E-DCH power allocation threshold and a current cumulative E-DCH power.

  • Patent number: 7929962
Abstract: A method is provided for maintaining synchronization between an AT and a base station during an idle period. During the idle period, a reduced number of uplink reference signals for uplink channel quality estimation are sent to the base station by the AT. The uplink reference signals are sent to assist coherent demodulation and uplink channel quality estimation for scheduling. During the uplink idle period, the numbers of uplink reference signals are designed to be reduced in selective coherent bandwidths. The selection of the coherent bandwidth alternates in time and covers the entire spectrum to allow the channel quality estimation through the entire spectrum.

  • Patent number: 7782900
Abstract: A method is provided for operating a multi-bandwidth OFDMA system that can achieve an enhanced bandwidth efficiency due to windowing without significantly impacting the underlying physical design of the receive filters. The method comprises establishing a bandwidth over which the radio resources transmit signals, the bandwidth being comprised of an edge-band and a center-band. Narrow band radio resources are assigned to a portion of the bandwidth that is at least partially within the edge-band.

  • Patent number: 7715349
Abstract: In a 3GPP standards Release 6 UMTS system, in order to avoid searching at NodeB for a maximum E-DPCCH-associated metric at discrete possible valid index values, or over disjoint possible valid index regions, at the UE the three different sources of information, the fixed number bits that comprise the RSN, TFI and the H-bit components of the E-DPCCH bit field, are mapped so that the decimal equivalents of the possible E-DPCCH indices lie within a continuous range of values.

  • Patent number: 7664467
Abstract: A method for coordinating control of radio resources for multicast/broadcast services in distributed radio resource management. The method includes communicating information between a plurality of units having radio resource management responsibilities. The communicated information is related to coordinating at least one multicast/broadcast service provided by the plurality of units.

  • Patent number: 7526304
Abstract: In a UMTS wireless communication system, the enhanced dedicated physical control channel (E-DPCCH) that is usually always transmitted together with the enhanced dedicated physical data channel (E-DPDCH) on the uplink from a UE to a NodeB is instead only transmitted when a predetermined “start criterion” is met and is turned off when a predetermined “stop criterion” is met until a “start criterion” is later met again. The UE starts transmitting E-DPCCH whenever the corresponding E-DPDCH transport format combination is different from the previous one in the same HARQ process or some other “start criterion” is met. Multiple mechanisms can be used to decide when the UE should switch off E-DPCCH transmission after the transport format combination of E-DPDCH has changed.

  • Patent number: 7522682
Abstract: The present invention provides a method and an apparatus for measuring a reception quality on a wireless communication link to a receiver by removing a bias in a plurality of received pilot symbols and obtaining a channel estimate for a channel, such as a wireless propagation channel, after substantially removing the bias. For a receiver, such as a rake receiver disposed in a base transceiver station, a bias removal module may extract a plurality of coefficients from a wireless propagation channel to remove a bias before a detector may receive the plurality of pilot symbols in the data stream to determine an error rate of the received pilot symbols where channel estimation is based on the received pilot symbols. In this manner, a systematic flaw in a link quality measurement based on an error rate of the received pilot symbols may be resolved for wireless communication systems.

  • Patent number: 7508863
Abstract: In the method of processing signals, multi-path signals are received, channel estimates for the received multi-path signals are determined, and a combining operation is applied to the multi-path signals, the combining operation being a function of a correlation matrix of the received multi-path signals, a correlation matrix of estimates for channels of the received multi-path signals, a cross-correlation matrix of the channels and channel estimates for the received multi-path signals, and the channel estimates.
