  • Patent number: 6842687
Abstract: A method for assisting, in a passing maneuver, for motor vehicles having a distance and speed control device, in which vehicles in the passing lane are taken into account and, if the traffic situation detected by sensors or an intervention by the driver suggests a desire to pass, control is temporarily carried out to an increased passing speed. The distances to the vehicles located in the passing lane are measured and the passing speed is calculated as a function of the distances of the vehicle to be passed and at least the vehicle directly preceding in the passing lane.

  • Patent number: 6836705
Abstract: A method and a device is described as well as a component for controlling a system, in particular in a motor vehicle, the control being implementable in different variants, a component being operable in different variants according to the variants of the control, and the component receiving at least one signal via an interface. The component is introduced into a system environment and adapted to this system environment and/or initialized with this system environment as a system, in that the variant of the system environment is determined. This is done in a system-immanent manner. When the component is first started, the variant is altered and/or preselected one time as a function of the at least one signal, in particular by the component itself. Any other change in and/or selection of the variant following the initial startup is possible only with authorization.

  • Patent number: 6789637
Abstract: The device ascertains a setpoint distance or a setpoint time gap with respect to a vehicle driving ahead as a function of the traveling speed, the distance control taking a minimum distance or a minimum time gap, specifiable by the driver, into consideration when determining the setpoint distance or the setpoint time gap. Since the driver's impression of distance is dependent on the visibility at the moment, in response to poor visibility (bad weather, darkness), the distance control increases the setpoint distance or the setpoint time gap ascertained for normal visibility.

  • Patent number: 6694277
Abstract: A device and a method are for monitoring misalignment of a distance sensor on a vehicle which represents a combination of two individual procedures. The two individual procedures are selected in such a way that one procedure has advantages in areas in which the other procedure functions disadvantageously, so that the weaknesses of one procedure may be compensated for by the strengths of the other procedure. Furthermore, with the aid of this combination, it may be decided with far greater certainty whether a misalignment is present which may be removed using suitable correcting measures, or whether an extreme misalignment is present, based on which the system must be switched off.

  • Patent number: 6591181
Abstract: A method and a device are for setting the longitudinal speed of a vehicle to a setpoint speed, in particular on the basis of a regulation, having controllable brakes. In operation of a cruise control system, the cruise control may be activated when the instantaneous driving speed is significantly higher than a stored setpoint speed. In this situation, there may be unwanted braking responses by the regulator, which may endanger the driver and the following road users. In such a situation, the method prevents a breaking measure from being implemented and ensures that the vehicle will coast, being braked only by the road resistance and the drag on the engine, until reaching the set speed. The driving response of the cruise control system approximates that of a human driver, so the responses of the automatic cruise control seem more intelligible for the driver.

  • Publication number: 20020138223
Abstract: The invention relates to a device and a method used to monitor mis-adjustments of the distance sensor of a motor vehicle, combining two individual methods. Both individual methods are selected in such a way that one method has advantages in areas where the other method functions at a disadvantage, whereby the shortcomings of one method can be compensated by the strengths of the other. By combining said methods, it is possible to decide with a far greater degree of reliability whether a mis-adjustment has occurred, requiring suitable follow-up measures or whether an extreme misadjustment has occurred, requiring the shut-down of the system.

  • Publication number: 20020138190
Abstract: A method and a device for setting the longitudinal speed of a vehicle to a setpoint speed is described, in particular on the basis of a regulation, having controllable brake units. In operation of a cruise control system, it may occur that the cruise control is activated again when the instantaneous driving speed is significantly higher than the stored setpoint speed. In this situation, there may be unwanted braking responses by the regulator which could endanger the driver and the following road users. In such a situation, the method according to the present invention prevents a braking measure from being implemented and ensures that the vehicle will coast, being braked only by the road resistance and the drag on the engine, until reaching the set speed. Through this method, the driving response of the cruise control system approximates that of a human driver, so the responses of the automatic cruise control seem more intelligible for the driver.

  • Patent number: 6351823
Abstract: A method and a device for monitoring a computer system which includes at least two processors. A first processor of the at least two processors monitors at least a second processor for correct functioning, by monitoring output signals of the second processor or the variables derived from it, at least with regard to their temporal sequence, their content, or their signal (wave) form. A relay of the output signals of the second processor to further units is blocked when the first processor, separately from the second processor, is placed in an energy-conserving operating mode.
