  • Patent number: 8787578
Abstract: Method and apparatus for encrypting transmission traffic at separate protocol layers L1, L2, and L3 so that separate encryption elements can be assigned to separate types of transmission traffic, which allows the implementation of different levels of encryption according to service requirements. Encryption elements use variable value inputs, called crypto-syncs, along with semi-permanent encryption keys to protect from replay attacks from rogue mobile stations. Since crypto-sync values vary, a method for synchronizing crypto-syncs at the mobile station and base station is also presented.

  • Publication number: 20140184644
Abstract: A mobile device detects a moveable foreground object in captured images, e.g., a series of video frames without depth information. The object may be one or more of the user's fingers. The object may be detected by warping one of a captured image of a scene that includes the object and a reference image of the scene without the object so they have the same view and comparing the captured image and the reference image after warping. A mask may be used to segment the object from the captured image. Pixels are detected in the extracted image of the object and the pixels are used to detect the point of interest on the foreground object. The object may then be tracked in subsequent images. Augmentations may be rendered and interacted with or temporal gestures may be detected and desired actions performed accordingly.

  • Patent number: 8730999
Abstract: Method and System for Utilization of an Outer Decoder in a Broadcast Services Communication System is described. Information to be transmitted is provided to a systematic portion of a plurality of transmit buffers and encoded by an outer decoder communicatively coupled to the transmit buffer. The resulting redundant bits are provided to a parity portion of each transmit buffer. The content of the transmit buffers, is multiplexed and encoded by an inner decoder to improve protection by adding redundancy. The receiving station recovers the transmitted information by an inverse process. Because a decoding complexity depends on the size of a systematic portion of the transmit buffer, reasoned compromise between a systematic portion size and number of transmit buffers yields decreased decoding complexity.

  • Patent number: 8611303
Abstract: Techniques to support handover of a terminal from a source base station to a target base station are described. In one design, a determination is made whether a change in personality is requested by the terminal. If the answer is ‘Yes’, then the personality of the terminal may be switched by sending one or more appropriate messages. The connection and RLP for the terminal may be reset due to the change in personality. A buffer of data reported by the source base station as being served to the terminal (e.g., no NAK was sent) may be saved by a BSC/PCF. The buffer of data may be sent to the target base station when handover occurs. New data may thereafter be sent to the target base station. This buffer of duplicate data may avoid both loss of data and retransmission timeout by TCP during the handover.

  • Publication number: 20130303222
Abstract: Embodiments described herein relate to connected-state radio session transfer in wireless communications. A target access network controller may create a radio session associated with an access terminal, the radio session corresponding with a source radio session at a source access network controller. The target access network controller may also establish a communication route between a data network and the access terminal via the target access network controller. The target access network controller may further receive a frozen state associated with the source radio session from the source access network controller. In an aspect, the frozen state may include a snapshot of any data being communicated through the source radio session when freezing occurred. The target access network controller may subsequently unfreeze the received state.

  • Patent number: 8583137
Abstract: Techniques for dynamically varying coverage in a multi-carrier communication system are described. A sector may operate on multiple carriers. The sector may vary coverage on a given carrier k based on its load, so that less interference may be caused to other sectors when the sector load is light. In one design, the sector may communicate on a first carrier at a first transmit power level and on a second carrier at a second transmit power level equal to or lower than the first transmit power level. The sector may vary the second transmit power level based on its load to vary the coverage of the second carrier. The sector may reduce the second transmit power level to zero or a low level if the sector load is light. The sector may also vary the second transmit power level based on a function of sector load or a switching pattern.

  • Publication number: 20130294693
Abstract: The noise in an image having text is removed by convolving a shaped kernel centered on a pixel for each pixel in the image. The shaped kernel has a shape configured to identify pixels that are not part of the text. For example, the shaped kernel may be shaped with zeros in a center of the kernel to identify pixels that are not part of the text. A value for the pixel is set to erase the pixel when the resulting convolution value for the pixel is less than a threshold. The process may be repeated multiple times for differently shaped kernels, including kernels of different sizes and different configurations, such as having values greater than one in at least one of a row, column, and diagonal.

  • Patent number: 8515424
Abstract: Embodiments described herein relate to connected-state radio session transfer in wireless communications. A source access network controller may lock a source radio session associated with an access terminal (e.g., in response to detecting a handoff condition associated with the access terminal), where the source access network controller may be in communication with a data network. The source access network controller may also instruct a target access network controller to create a target radio session corresponding with the source radio session, and to establish a communication route between the data network and the access network via the target ANC. The source access network controller may then freeze a state associated with the source radio session and transmits the frozen state to the target access network controller. The target access network controller may subsequently unfreeze the received state and further unlock the radio session, hence resuming control of the access terminal.

  • Patent number: 8483223
Abstract: Techniques for generating and transmitting packets on multiple links in a wireless communication system are described. In one aspect, a transmitter generates new packets for the multiple links based on the likelihood of each link being available. The transmitter determines the likelihood of each carrier being available based on whether or not there is a pending packet on that carrier and, if yes, the number of subpackets sent for the pending packet. The transmitter generates new packets such that packets for links progressively less likely to be available contain data units with progressively higher sequence numbers. The transmitter determines whether each link is available and sends a packet on each link that is available. In another aspect, the transmitter generates and sends new packets in a manner to ensure in-order transmission. In one design, the transmitter generates new packets for each possible combination of links that might be available.

  • Patent number: 8457067
Abstract: Methods and apparatus for using separate caches to retain overhead information while a device is in idle mode. A first cache can be associated with a first timer and can be utilized when a device is performing idle handoff. A second cache, associated with a second timer, can be utilized when a device is not performing idle handoff. The second timer can have a longer period of validity than the first timer. The separate caches can be utilized in networks that include femto cell topography, wherein re-use of pilot PN codes are at a greater frequency than the re-use frequency in macro cell topography.

  • Patent number: 8363616
Abstract: A method and apparatus for requesting Point-to-Point Protocol (PPP) instances from a packet data services network includes a mobile station configured to send an origination message to a packet data service node (PDSN) at which it has arrived upon leaving the vicinity of another PDSN. The message informs the new PDSN of the new location of the mobile station and indicates both the number of dormant PPP instances associated with the mobile station and a service reference identifier for each such PPP instance. A flag within the message may be used to indicate whether the PPP instances are dormant (i.e., whether the mobile station is engaged in a call). Communications channel resources of packet data services nodes are optimized by reducing the information included in messages from the Packet Control Function network element to the Packet Data Service Node network element, and by reducing the use of Mobile Internet Protocol agent advertisement.

  • Patent number: 8340698
Abstract: A method for delivering SMS to ATs in a first communication network providing DO and 1x interfaces and for offloading the delivery of the SMS from a second communication network including an MSC, comprising monitoring a DO control channel for pages by an AT and delivering the SMS in SIP to the AT over the DO interface. The method may further comprise tuning the AT to the DO interface and determining whether the AT is SIP registered for using the DO interface. An application server determines whether the AT is SIP registered for using the DO interface. When the DO interface is not available, the SMS may be delivered over the 1x interface and the method further comprises the AT sending a special SMS to an SMS gateway, which causes the application server to remember that the AT is now monitoring the first communication network including a circuit-switched network.
