  • Patent number: 5685935
Abstract: A nonwoven abrasive or scouring article having at least one major surface and an interior region comprises an open, lofty web of first and second crimped, staple organic thermoplastic fibers, wherein the first organic thermoplastic fiber comprises materials selected from the group consisting of polyamides, pololefins, and polyesters, and wherein said second organic thermoplastic fiber comprises at least two materials of different heat stability. The first and second organic crimped, staple thermoplastic fibers are melt-bonded together at least at a portion of points where they contact. At least a portion of the first and second fibers of one major surface of the nonwoven article have an abrasive coating bonded thereto, and at least a portion of the first and second fibers of the interior region have no abrasive coating bonded thereto, a structure which minimizes the amount of binder which must be used.

  • Patent number: 5363604
Abstract: A low-density non woven abrasive article formed of a multiplicity of continuous, crimped, thermoplastic organic filaments having a portion of the filaments entangled with one another and having an organic thermoset binder which binds at least some of the filaments at points where they contact, performs well as a scouring article. The filaments of the article may further have abrasive particles adhesively bound thereto by the binder. The web of the low-density article is produced by entangling a plurality of substantially parallel, continuous, crimped, thermoplastic organic filaments, preferably by needlepunching, and coating the entangled web with a binder precursor solution or slurry.

  • Patent number: 5025596
Abstract: A low-density nonwoven abrasive pad, especially suited for use as a scouring article, formed of a multiplicity of continuous, crimped thermoplastic organic filaments having one end of substantially all of the filaments bonded together at one end of the pad and the opposite end of substantially all of the filaments bonded together at the opposite end of the pad. The abrasive pad is made by arranging the filaments into an open lofty array, bonding substantially all of the filaments together at a first and second bond site, and then cutting the array at the bond sites such that each bond is divided into at least two bond area segments with each bond area sgement having the filament array bonded therein in a unitary structure.

  • Patent number: 4486200
Abstract: An abrasive article comprising a plurality of separated abrasive agglomerates distributed within a matrix of undulated filaments is provided. The invention also provides a method of making an abrasive article comprising forming, within a lofty open web comprising undulated filaments bonded at points of mutual contact, a plurality of separated abrasive agglomerates to provide an abrasive agglomerate-impregnated web. Articles may be prepared of the agglomerate-impregnated web per se or by laminating layers of the web together preferably under pressure. Exemplary articles include abrasive wheels, discs, belts, sheets, blocks and the like.

  • Patent number: 4199835
Abstract: A scouring pad in the shape of a ball comprises a plurality of radially slit, regular-shaped, planar segments of conformable, lofty, low-density nonwoven abrasive product fastened together under compression at their centers with fastening means. The segments are slit from the outer edge toward the center to provide radially disposed, equally spaced slits which define radially aligned lobes, the total array of which defines the ball shape.
