Patent number: 7367897Abstract: A golf club head with a variable coefficient of restitution is disclosed and claimed. The club head includes a bias member that contacts and exerts a force against the interior surface of the face. The force exerted against the interior of the face lessens the face flexibility, and decreases the club head coefficient of restitution. The bias member can be adjusted from outside the club head, allowing the manufacturer to precisely adjust the club head coefficient of restitution.Type: GrantFiled: February 14, 2005Date of Patent: May 6, 2008Assignee: Acushnet CompanyInventor: Raymond L. Poynor

Patent number: 7367899Abstract: A hitting face of a golf club head having improved strength properties. In one embodiment, the hitting face is made from multiple materials. The multiple materials form layers of a laminate construction of a flat portion of a hitting face insert. The layers of the laminate are joined together using a diffusion bonding technique. Preferably, at least one layer of the laminate is a thin layer of a very strong material that forms the rear side of the hitting face insert so as to prevent failure of the hitting face insert on that rear side due to repeated impacts with golf balls.Type: GrantFiled: April 13, 2005Date of Patent: May 6, 2008Assignee: Acushnet CompanyInventors: Scott A. Rice, Nicholas M. Nardacci, Raymond L. Poynor

Patent number: 7303489Abstract: A golf club head and a method of making a golf club head includes a framework that is applied to the rear portion of the club head. A heat shrinkable membrane is mounted to the framework, by either mechanical means or by application of a bonding agent, creating a hollow golf club wherein the membrane material at the center of the rear portion is taut and exposed. The membrane is made from a conformable heat shrinkable fabric having a high tensile strength and negligible compressive strength. The fabric comprises thin, relative flexible, long interwoven fibers such as Kevlar, canvas, sailcloth and fabrics used in the skins of airplanes.Type: GrantFiled: August 18, 2005Date of Patent: December 4, 2007Assignee: Acushnet CompanyInventors: Peter J. Gilbert, Michael Scott Burnett, Raymond L. Poynor

Patent number: 7297072Abstract: A metal wood golf club head adapted for attachment to a shaft, comprising of a body portion and a crown portion, each portion constructed of a different density material. Combining a high-density material in the body portion, with a low-density material in the crown portion, creates an ultra-low center of gravity relative to the geometric face center, resulting in higher launch angles and spin rate ratios. The material for the crown portion is preferably a composite. A vibration dampening gasket is disposed between the ledge and lip sections of the body and crown respectively.Type: GrantFiled: August 25, 2006Date of Patent: November 20, 2007Assignee: Acushnet CompanyInventors: Jeffrey W. Meyer, Scott A. Rice, Raymond L. Poynor

Patent number: 7214142Abstract: A metal wood golf club head adapted for attachment to a shaft, comprising of a body portion and a crown portion, each portion constructed of a different density material. Combining a high-density material in the body portion, with a low-density material in the crown portion, creates an ultra-low center of gravity relative to the geometric face center, resulting in higher launch angles and spin rate ratios. The material for the crown portion is preferably a composite. The crown portion comprises an inner surface layer of a vibration dampening and acoustical attenuating material. The transverse surfaces of the crown and body portions creating a gap that is filled with a shock absorption material such as putty or a rubber based structural adhesive.Type: GrantFiled: March 12, 2004Date of Patent: May 8, 2007Assignee: Acushnet CompanyInventors: Jeffrey W. Patent number: 7144331Abstract: A substantially hollow body metal wood golf club head has a wrap around insert that comprises a substantial portion of the front face. The insert having a wing-like extension that extends around the heel portion of the club head and a pre-determined distance of about 0.657 inch into the skirt portion of the club head. A gap of about 0.06 inch to about 0.36 inch is created between an internal thru-hosel and the interior wall of the heel. The gap represents material and weight that may be used more effectively in other parts of the club head. The lack of connection between the hosel and the front face creates a greater unsupported front face and therefore a greater “sweet spot” area.Type: GrantFiled: October 15, 2004Date of Patent: December 5, 2006Assignee: Acushnet CompanyInventor: Raymond L. Patent number: 6960142Abstract: The present invention relates to a golf club head provided with a face and a body. The face has a central zone and a intermediate zone adjacent and surrounding the central zone. The central zone has a first flexural stiffness and the intermediate zone has a second flexural stiffness. The club head face is configured and dimensioned such that the first flexural stiffness is significantly greater than the second flexural stiffness such that upon ball impact with the face, the intermediate zone exhibits substantial deformation so that the central zone moves into the club head. At the same time, the central zone exhibits minimal deformation so that it moves into and out of the club head as a unit. Furthermore, the face exhibits a high coefficient of restitution.Type: GrantFiled: April 30, 2003Date of Patent: November 1, 2005Assignee: Acushnet CompanyInventors: Laurent C. Bissonnette, Nicholas M. Nardacci, Raymond L. Poynor

Publication number: 20040002395Abstract: A metallic golf club head includes a body and impact face defining a cavity therein, and a hosel for attachment to a shaft. The body includes a sole portion having a pair of insert members, preferably in the shape of triangular wedges, which protrude through into the cavity. The sole portion includes a hexahedron shaped bridge weight spanning across and connecting the members and creating an underpass therein. The bridge weight of a size and height for altering the weight distribution and therefore the center of gravity of the club head without impeding the acoustical properties of the club head.Type: ApplicationFiled: June 27, 2002Publication date: January 1, 2004Inventor: Raymond L. Patent number: 6508722Abstract: The present invention relates to a golf club head casting provided with an internal perimetral welt about the club face. During the club head casting process, the thermomechanical behavior of the casting allows differential cooling across the club face. The face cools at a different rate than the welt, thereby allowing the exterior surface of the face to be maintained in a generally convex shape. Thus, a close-tolerance casting that conforms to preselected face tolerance specifications may be produced.Type: GrantFiled: January 31, 2000Date of Patent: January 21, 2003Assignee: Acushnet CompanyInventors: Terrill R.
