Patent number: 4537636Abstract: A process for preparing nacreous pigments having improved gloss properties and based on mica platelets coated with metal oxides comprises suspending mica platelets in a solution containing titanium sulfate, the mica platelets having a coating comprising a homogeneous mixture of titanium dioxide, aluminum oxide and silicon dioxide, and further coating the suspended platelets by slow heating of the suspension.Type: GrantFiled: March 30, 1983Date of Patent: August 27, 1985Assignee: Merck Patent Gesellschaft mit beschrankter HaftungInventors: Horst Bernhard, Reiner Esselborn
-
Patent number: 4494993Abstract: Nacreous pigments having improved transparency and tinctorial strength and based on mica flakes coated with metal oxides, have a metal oxide layer which is formed as a homogeneous mixed layer in which, in addition to titanium dioxide, there also is present silicon dioxide and aluminum oxide. These can be produced by coating mica in an aqueous suspension with a titanium dioxide hydrate layer and then washing, drying and calcining. Silicon dioxide and aluminum hydroxide are precipitated as a uniform layer together with the titanium dioxide hydrate. The new pigments can be used for pigmenting plastics, lacquers, paints and cosmetics, inter alia.Type: GrantFiled: December 27, 1982Date of Patent: January 22, 1985Assignee: Merck Patent Gesellschaft mit beschrankter HaftungInventors: Horst Bernhard, Reiner Esselborn
-
Patent number: 4482389Abstract: Nacreous pigments which have improved stability to weathering and are based on mica flakes coated with metal oxides, are provided with a stabilizing, chromium-containing second coating which comprises a combination of metal salts. To form the second layer, iron and/or manganese are deposited on the starting pigments in the form of the hydroxide, carbonate or phosphate and chromium is deposited on the starting pigments in the form of the hydroxide, carbonate or phosphate or as methacrylato-chromium chloride. These are prepared by adding iron and/or manganese and chromium, in the form of salt solutions and at a pH of 2 to 8, to an aqueous suspension of a mica flake pigment coated with metal oxides, precipitating them on the mica flake pigments, and separating off these pigments and drying them.Type: GrantFiled: September 22, 1983Date of Patent: November 13, 1984Assignee: Merck Patent Gesellschaft mit Beschrankter HaftungInventors: Klaus-Dieter Franz, Klaus Ambrosius, Reiner Esselborn, Manfred Kieser
-
Patent number: 4128435Abstract: Pigmented substantially crack-free casein plastic compositions containing a minor, luster-imparting quantity of coated mica platelets, wherein at least 75% of the pigment particles possess an average platelet size of below 10 .mu.m., a thickness of about 0.1 to 0.7 .mu.m. and a ratio of diameter to thickness of about 10 to 200.Type: GrantFiled: June 24, 1977Date of Patent: December 5, 1978Assignee: Merck Patent Gesellschaft mit beschrankter HaftungInventors: Wilhelm Baumer, Horst Bernhard, Reiner Esselborn, Jorg Ohngemach, Otto Stahlecker, Fritz Zureda
