Abstract: A communications system consisting of a server system that stores software applications, a broadcast system that broadcasts the software applications, and a multiplicity of portable clients that each include a receiver having a tuner that is selectively tunable to receive a selected one of the software applications broadcasted by the broadcast system. The portable clients can be any type of portable data communications device, such as a hand-held, palm-top, or notebook computing device, a PDA, an intelligent cellular phone, or any other personal multimedia appliance or Network Computer (NC). The broadcast system can be any suitable satellite or terrestrial air or cable broadcast system. For example, a CATV broadcast network, a DBS broadcast network, an HDTV broadcast network, or other appropriate broadcast network could be utilized.

Abstract: There is disclosed a data processing system for receiving at least one of a user data file and an application program wirelessly transmitted from a central server. The data processing system comprises an RF transceiver for receiving in a forward channel blocks of data transmitted by the central server and transmitting to the central server in a reverse channel at least one of user input data and user commands. The blocks of data comprise the user data file and the application program. The data processing system further comprises a download controller for monitoring the received blocks of data and detecting therein corrupted data associated with a first block of data. The download controller, in response to the detection of the corrupted data, transmits to the central server via a wireline network a retransmission request capable of causing the central server to retransmit the first block of data.

Abstract: A method for optimizing and enhancing Java programs to run more efficiently on specific hardware platforms, with a focus on increased execution performance and a reduction of the amount of memory the Java program ultimately requires for its functionality, includes steps for using new classes which define constants and specialization functions to identify and modify existing classes associated with a Java program. The method depends on the evaluation and analysis of the constants, with the results of such evaluation and analysis determining what kind of code specialization occurs. As an optional step, the resulting platform enhanced Java classes overwrite the original Java classes, which permits the modified classes to be utilized by the same Java program or other Java programs running on the same hardware platform when the Java programs are run in the future. A software product is also described.
