  • Patent number: 7023803
Abstract: Apparatus, and an associated method, for controlling a packet data flow in a radio communication system, such as a third-generation, cellular communication system. Indicia of communications of the packet data flow upon an air link extending to a mobile station are provided to a selector. The selector selects, responsive to values of the communication indicia, whether to alter, such as by reducing or terminating, the packet data flow upon the air link. Selection is made by the selector and indications of the selection are provided to an allocator. The allocator allocates communication capacity in the radio access network of the communication system to the packet data flow as well as other ongoing packet data flows in the radio access network.

  • Publication number: 20050172014
Abstract: This invention provides an improved address management scheme in a mobile router (MR) that connects a mobile network into the Internet via an access network. The MR performs neighbor advertisement on behalf of mobile network nodes (MNNs) within the mobile network so that packets directed towards the MNNs are routed correctly to the MR, and then to the corresponding MNN, while maintaining standard address management procedures, such as IPv6 address management procedures, in the access network and in the mobile network.

  • Publication number: 20050169220
Abstract: A method includes connecting a mobile router (MR), also referred to herein as a gateway mobile terminal, of a mobile network (MONET) to an access point (AP) of an access network (AN) that includes an Access Router (AR); making a request to obtain a plurality of link addresses from a link address manager of the AN; allocating individual ones of the plurality of link addresses to individual ones of network nodes of the MONET; and performing a neighbor discovery procedure with the AR to send at least one neighbor advertisement to declare the allocated individual ones of the assigned plurality of link addresses. In one embodiment the request is made to obtain a set of link layer addresses (LLAs) that are allocated to individual ones of the network nodes, while in another embodiment the request is made to obtain a group identification (Group_ID) that is used to formulate a set of LLAs that are allocated to individual ones of the network nodes.

  • Publication number: 20050165917
Abstract: The invention proposes a method for controlling a connection between a first network node and a second network node, wherein the connection is controlled by a packet filtering function filtering packets such that a packet is discarded in case a source address and/or a destination address do not comply with a filtering rule, wherein the packet filtering function is configured at a connection set up, and at least one of the first or second network node is adapted to change its address, the method comprising the steps of informing, the packet filtering function about the new address of the network node having changed its address, and updating the packet filter of the packet filtering function by using the new address of the network node having changed its address. The invention also proposes a corresponding network system comprising at least a network node and a packet filtering network element. Furthermore, the invention proposes a corresponding packet filtering network device.

  • Publication number: 20050147042
Abstract: A “loose ACK” method by which a radio access network of a cellular network monitors wireless transmission of packets according to a layered protocol including a radio layer (near the physical layer) and an upper layer, the method including: a step (23) of slow release—in what is called normal buffer management—in which the upper layer removes from a buffer maintained by the upper layer the oldest packet in the buffer when the buffer is full and a new packet arrives, and does so independently of whether the packet being removed has been acknowledged by the radio layer of the terminal; and a step (24) of local acknowledgement in which the radio layer sends an acknowledgement to the upper layer on the occurrence of a predetermined event. The local acknowledgement can trigger either special mode buffer management or release of the buffer to a target (entity or layer).

  • Publication number: 20040203596
Abstract: As described above, for reducing IP level signaling and radio resource load during the attachment or update, e.g. L3 or IP attachment/update, of a mobile unit to a cellular wireless communication network, preferably an IPv6 based network, wherein access network elements and routing network elements are provided, an identification element is transmitted from the mobile unit to one of the access network elements. The identification element indicates a current attachment of the mobile unit to one of the routing network elements. The transmitted identification element is checked so as to determine whether the access network element is provided with a connection to the one routing network element. Furthermore, it is checked whether a network status still allows the usage of this routing network element by the mobile unit.

  • Patent number: 6775533
Abstract: Apparatus, and an associated method, for facilitating communication of a data block to a mobile station when a handover of communications is effectuated. A segmentation and distribution unit is positioned at a base station gateway, and the base station gateway is coupled to both a first target entity and a second target entity. Portions of the data block are provided to the first target entity to be communicated to the mobile station. When a handover of communications is effectuated, the buffered portion of the data which has not yet been successfully delivered to the mobile station is forwarded to the second target entity. And, other portions of the data block, not yet delivered to the first target gateway are, thereafter, provided directly to the second target entity.

  • Patent number: 6771962
Abstract: Apparatus, and an associated method, for a mobile communication system in which handovers of communications are effectuated between access points of the communication system as a mobile node travels there through. A manner is provided by which to perform handover evaluation functions more efficiently by performing at least some of the handover evaluations at the access point to which a mobile node is attached. And, a manner is provided by which to provide care-of-addresses formed of temporary identifiers to temporarily identify a mobile node to permit the routing of packet data thereto during a communication session.

  • Patent number: 6708031
Abstract: A new session or handoff procedure is triggered for a mobile station in a communications network having a packet switched network connected to a wireless network. A data identifier from the wireless network is determined which indicates the location of the mobile station in the wireless network. A list maintained in a gateway connected between the wireless network and the packet switch network associates data identifiers of the packet switched network with data identifiers of the wireless network. The data identifier of the packet switched network indicating the location of the mobile station in the wireless network is determined using the list maintained in the gateway.

  • Patent number: 6674734
Abstract: A method, computer program, and apparatus for allowing endpoints to move between zones of a packet-switched network. In the invention, a communication between local and remote endpoints are established via a first gatekeeper, which services a first zone of the packet-switched network, when the local endpoint is at a location serviced by the first zone of the packet-switched network. When the local endpoint moves to a location serviced by a second zone of the packet-switched network, subsequent to the initial hand-off, communication between the local and remote endpoints is maintained via the first gatekeeper and a second gatekeeper which services the second zone of the packet-switched network, by performing an initial hand-off communication control functions from the first gatekeeper to the second gatekeeper.

  • Publication number: 20030225887
Abstract: A method, system, and device provide for establishing IP level connectivity between an L-2 dormant mobile node (MN) and an IP cellular network, such as a Mobile IPv4, IPv6, of hybrid Mobile IPv4/IPv6 cellular network. An L-2 dormant mobile node detects a condition requiring enablement of IP level connection to execute the IP level procedures. The L-2 dormant mobile node, in response to detecting the condition, sends an initiation signal to the radio access network. The radio access network, in response to the initiation signal, initiates a radio bearer setup to facilitate executing of the IP level procedures. The radio bearer, in one approach, is a default radio bearer associated with the mobile node.
