    Abstract: A guard structure of a patient support, such as a hospital bed, is electrically unlockable. An electromechanical actuator, such as a solenoid, may be used to electrically unlock the guard structure. The guard structure may also be mechanically unlockable. The guard structure may automatically unlock during a CPR emergency. A maximum allowable height of the patient support may be adjusted based on a sensed locked state or position of the guard structure. A release for the guard structure may be positioned to be accessible to an occupant of the patient support. The release may include an access port that may be opened. The release may include a button that electrically unlocks the guard structure.

    Abstract: A backrest of a bed is pivotable with respect to a bed frame. A backrest actuator assembly connects the backrest to the bed frame. The backrest actuator assembly is configured to raise and lower the backrest with respect to the bed frame by way of an actuator. The backrest actuator assembly is further configured with a lockable damper to release the backrest to lower due to gravity over a damped range of motion. The backrest can be so lowered during an emergency, such as an emergency that requires administration of CPR to the bed's occupant. The lockable damper can stop the lowering of the backrest at any position along the damped range of motion. After an emergency lowering, the backrest actuator assembly can automatically reset to a normal operation state.

    Abstract: A patient support device, such as a bed, includes a frame, a backrest or other platform movable with respect to the frame, and an actuator connecting the backrest to the frame. The actuator is configured to raise and lower, or otherwise move, the backrest or platform with respect to the frame. An actuator sensor is provided to sense movement of the actuator. A backrest sensor is provided to sense movement of the backrest. A controller is coupled to the actuator, the actuator sensor, and the backrest sensor. The controller is configured to stop the actuator from raising the backrest in response to a characteristic signal from the actuator sensor. The controller is further configured to stop the actuator from lowering the backrest in response to at least a characteristic signal from the backrest sensor. The characteristic signals are defined to prevent the backrest or platform from moving when obstructed or overloaded in order to reduce the chance of damage or injury.

    Abstract: A system for maintaining a height adjustable patient bed in a level position while adjusting height of the bed is provided. The system has electrically powered linear actuators having internal position sensors, the linear actuators operable to adjust the height of the bed. The system also has control means, electrically coupled to the linear actuators, which compares position information from the internal position sensors and then adjusts the power supply to one or the other of the linear actuators in response to the position information. This permits the trailing linear actuator to catch up to the lead linear actuator to maintain the bed in a level position while the height of the bed is being adjusted. Since the internal position sensors work on small changes in position, the leveling effect is not noticeable leading to less tilt of the bed and a smoother motion during height adjustment of he bed.
