    Abstract: In a data processing system that includes operating system software with a messaging capability, a method of transmitting a message between software processes includes a message clearing house that(a) receives a message transmittal request from a sending process;(b) generates a header for the message in accordance with the operating system's requirements; said header includes information indicating the time at which the request is received, and said header is stored in a circular buffer to facilitate debugging;(c) determines an exchange address for the process that is to receive the message; and(d) transmits the message via the operating system to the exchange address of the receiving process.

    Abstract: A method for retrieving and outputting literal strings in a data processing device. The strings are stored in the device's memory in the form of two or more tables. A directory of the tables is generated. When a literal string is needed, the directory is searched for an appropriate table; when an appropriate table is found, the table is searched for the needed string. When a string or table is to be corrected or superseded, a later table is stored in the memory. An updated directory is assembled. The updated directory is arranged so that the later table is searched before the corrected or superseded table.

    Abstract: A register system such as a carrier management system has a scale for weighing parcels, and a computer for determining shipping costs of the parcels. The computer has a memory including one or more accounting registers. A user PROM having a unique identification number therein is insertable in the system, and an initialization program stores this number in the system memory. Transactions cannot be accounted unless the numbers in the PROM and memory compare. A further PROM is insertable in the system in order to enable the initialization program.
