    Abstract: For handling data being communicated over lossless Ethernet that is sensitive to delays, a processor designates data being transmitted over an Ethernet connection as one of low latency data and standard data. The processor further indicates that a Fibre Channel over Ethernet (FCoE) device supports transmission of the low latency data using a type length value (TLV) of a data center bridging capability exchange protocol (DCBX) as of Aug. 10, 2010. The processor transmits the low latency data and indicating that the low latency data being transmitted is low latency data. The processor detects one or more delays in the transmission of the low latency data. The processor issues a flow control command to pause a port from sending frames to the Ethernet for a given amount of time in response to detecting the one or more delays.

    Abstract: In one embodiment, power level management in accordance with the present description, is provided in a storage unit having both a disk storage drive, and another non-volatile, non-disk memory or storage such as a solid state drive, for storing metadata. The metadata storage provides direct access to the metadata stored in the non-disk storage even though the disk storage drive may be in a low power mode in which the data storage media disk of the disk storage drive is stopped or spinning at a reduced rate of rotation. As a result, power consumption and cooling requirements associated with disk storage drives, may be reduced in a low power level mode of storage unit operation for input/output operations limited to metadata stored in the metadata storage. Other features and aspects may be realized, depending upon the particular application.

    Abstract: A method for minimizing head seek movement and improving I/O performance of a hard disk drive is disclosed. In one embodiment, such a method includes logically dividing storage space of a hard disk drive into storage areas of substantially equal size. The method monitors a temperature of each of the storage areas. The temperature indicates how frequently data in a corresponding storage area is accessed. The method swaps data in storage areas of the hard disk drive based on temperature. These swaps involve moving hotter data toward outer tracks of the disk drive and colder data toward inner tracks of the disk drive. A corresponding system and computer program product are also disclosed.
