  • Patent number: 6493202
Abstract: An electromagnetic operator includes first and second coils wound coaxially. An armature partially surrounds the coils for channeling flux during energization of the coils. The armature may be formed of a bent plate and secured to a ferromagnetic support. A control circuit applies energizing signals to the coils during operation. Both coils are energized during an initial phase of operation. One of the coils is subsequently released or de-energized automatically. A timing circuit removes current from the second coil after a variable time period. The time period may be a function of the configuration of the timing circuit, such as an RC time constant, and of the energizing signal.

  • Patent number: 6198614
Abstract: An electrical contactor includes an electromagnetic operator which may be powered by either AC or DC power. For use with AC power, a rectifier circuit converts AC waveforms to DC waveforms and applies the converted power to DC one or more DC coils. The rectifier circuitry applies DC power directly to a bus. A pair of coils may be used, such as separate pickup and holding coils. The pickup coil may be de-energized after an initial phase of operation. To permit rapid release of the holding coil, a control circuit interrupts an induced current path through the coil upon removal of power from the bus.

  • Patent number: 5657194
Abstract: A reset circuit for an overload relay includes a timing circuit coupled to a switching circuit for automatically resetting the relay a predetermined time after a trip. The timing circuit includes a capacitor and a resistor in parallel with a reset coil. The capacitor is charged during normal operation and begins to discharge through the resistor following a trip at a first rate determined by the size of the resistor. The switching circuit includes a pair of transistors, a pair of capacitors and a pair of resistors. When the capacitor in the timing circuit has discharged a predetermined amount following a trip, the switching circuit is triggered and couples the capacitor to ground through one of the transistors, causing a rush of current through the reset coil sufficient to reset the relay.

  • Patent number: 5283708
Abstract: A device protects an electric load, such as a motor, from excessive current levels. The current flows from a source to the load through a switch and a primary winding of a current sensing transformer. The voltage across a secondary winding of the current sensing transformer is rectified to produce a voltage which is measured to determine the level of current through the load. The voltage across the secondary winding also powers components of the device. In a first mode of operation, current from the secondary winding is applied to charge a power supply capacitor. In a second mode of operation the level of the rectified voltage is sensed to produce a sample of the level of the current flowing through the load. From this sample the change in temperature of the load since a previous sample is calculated and used to derive the present load temperature. When the present load temperature exceeds a defined threshold level, the switch is opened to disconnect the load from the electricity source.

  • Patent number: 4210948
Abstract: A method of monitoring open phase, phase reversal and voltage unbalance conditions in a polyphase source includes shifting the phase of signals which are proportional to the line voltages in a three-phase A.C. power source by 180.degree., +60.degree., and -60.degree., respectively, and summing the phase-shifted signals to generate a signal which is proportional to the negative-sequence component of the three-phase line voltage. This signal is rectified and compared with a reference signal. If a net negative-sequence signal is generated over a sufficient time period a positive output signal decreases until it crosses a switching threshold to disconnect a load from the source. The output signal will not rise again to the switching threshold, thereby allowing reconnection of the load, until the negative-sequence signal subsides and is less than the reference signal. A circuit is disclosed with three operational amplifiers and two passive filters to carry out the invented method.

  • Patent number: 4195324
Abstract: An SCR is connected across one of three line contacts which couple the power lines to the windings of an a.c. motor. When the line contacts are opened to shut down the motor, heating current is applied to one of the motor windings through the SCR to raise its temperature above the ambient dew point. The SCR is fired every cycle of the line current and the firing angle is controlled in response to a command signal to provide the proper amount of heating current in the motor winding. The command signal is generated by summing a preselected reference signal with a negative feedback signal which is indicative of the amount of motor heating.
