Abstract: An optical character reader for conversion of information to a machine readable code from a strip of aplha-numeric characters on the face of a document. It includes an elongated document slot along which the document may be hand guided through a predetermined path. Optical viewing means is provided across a scan line intersecting the path of the alpha-numeric characters. A character scanning assembly electronically generates images of each character. Recognition processing means encodes these images into a machine readable code. All of the physical, optical and electronic components are contained within a compact single enclosure. Optical viewing is accomplished on a separable frame assembly having a surface area adapted to engage the document. The frame includes at least one light guiding slot and an intersecting view slot or aperture. An upright ventilation duct intersects the light guiding slot.
Abstract: A connector to provide a fast-make coupling by which releasably to interconnect a control device to a push-pull control cable assembly. The control device has at least a sheath member and a plunger movable longitudinally within a passage through the sheath member. A connector housing is substantially permanently secured to the casing of the push-pull control cable assembly and releasably attached to the sheath member so as to be longitudinally aligned with the passageway therein. A shuttle plug, which is secured to the core of the push-pull control cable assembly is slidably received within the connector housing and the passageway in the sheath member to which the connector housing is releasably attached. A lug is presented from the plunger and interacts with a socket in the shuttle plug to effect an interconnection that is readily engaged and released, but only when the connector housing is not attached to the sheath member.
Abstract: Novel cellulosic sizing agents are described. They are ring-opened aziridinyl homopolymers of ##EQU1## wherein R.sub.1 and R.sub.2 are hydrogen or lower alkyl; R.sub.3 is hydrogen or methyl; R.sub.4 is an organic hydrophobic group (e.g., C.sub.8 -C.sub.24 alkyl radical); and X is oxygen or amido nitrogen. The above homopolymers can also be blended with cationic starch to form useful sizing compositions. These sizing agents are normally employed as aqueous emulsions. E.g., paper having excellent sizing properties was prepared from a paper pulp containing a mixture of cationic starch and poly[stearyl 3-(1-aziridinyl)propionate].
