  • Patent number: 5031318
Abstract: A hand-held razor of the wet-shave type includes a thin flexible foil member with a plurality of apertures, each of which has opposed sharpened shaving edge portions. A displacing mechanism cyclically displaces the foil along a predetermined path such that the velocity of the opposed edge portions caused by the mechanism is substantially greater than the speed of motion caused by normal shaving stroke manipulation. The amplitude of each displacement cycle is greater than the width of a beard hair and less than the distance between the oppoosed edge portions.

  • Patent number: 5002426
Abstract: A revolving paddle mixer for re-mixing a hot asphalt mix deposited in the hopper of a road paving machine. The mixer takes the form of a plurality of paddles angularly positioned relative to each other and mounted on a revolving shaft adjacent to the conveyor for transporting the asphalt mix material to the rotating auger. The resultant re-mixture is more uniform and dense so that a smooth pavement is laid on the roadway.

  • Patent number: 4914869
Abstract: An improved apparatus and method are provided for cutting a tire surface to remove selected portions of rubber from the tire surface while the tire is rotating. The apparatus and method are especially useful in removing tread material from the tire to improve the force variation and runout characteristics of the tire. The material is removed by a cutting device such as a grinding wheel and a positioning device which holds the cutting device in a fixed cutting position for an incremental period of time while a corresponding incremental segment of the tire circumference, for instance a segment equal to 1/100 of the circumference (3.6.degree.), passes by the cutter. A sensing device measures a characteristic of the tire, such as its radial forced variation, and radial run-out of the tire is also measured.

  • Patent number: 4882929
Abstract: Changes in the tide effects at a given location are measured by monitoring the respective levels of a measuring liquid in two containers which are in fluid communication with one another. The liquid levels are measured by suitable transducers including floats, and result in electronic signals indicative of the respective positions of the floats. A difference between the two signals is either computed or obtained from a differential amplifier into which the signals indicative of the respective float positions are inputted. A change in the difference between the float positions measures a change in the tidal effects at the location. The change in tidal effects is advantageously measured in conjunction with measuring leakage of liquid from liquid storage tanks, such as fuel storage tanks of filling stations, where tide effects occur and must be taken into account.

  • Patent number: 4796469
Abstract: Process and apparatus for measuring liquid level changes in horizontally disposed cylindrical storage tanks compensates for thermal expansion and contraction of the liquid in the tank during the measurements. A vertically disposed substantially cylindrical container in the storage tank has a valve which controls fluid communication between the container and the storage tank. A float and associated sensing mechanism measure the level of liquid in the container. A measurement of the liquid level is made in the beginning of the test with fluid communication open between the container and the tank. A second measurement is taken after a fixed time period during which fluid communication between the container and the tank is closed. From the second measurement a theoretical liquid level is calculated which would exist in the tank due to temperature effects, and without leakage.

  • Patent number: 4670091
Abstract: In a process of forming vias for multilevel interconnects used in integrated circuits, a layer of a first metal is formed on a semiconductor substrate. A layer of a second metal is formed on the first metal layer. The second metal layer is etched in a predetermined via pattern with a second etchant which reacts with the second metal and which is substantially unreactive with the first metal. The first metal layer is then etched with a first etchant which reacts with the first metal and which is substantialy unreactive with the second metal or with the semiconductor substrate in order to form a predetermined contacting relationship with the predetermined via pattern. This process may be used to generate second and subsequent levels of vias and interconnects which can be used to contact metal layer at any level directly to the substrate by building via posts from the substrate to any desired metal layer.

  • Patent number: 4662209
Abstract: A system for measuring the course length of a well bore uses a probe containing accelerometers to generate a first output signal indicative of the time rate of change of the probe's velocity as it travels through the bore. The probe also contains two casing collar locators separated by a measured distance. A microcomputer in the probe integrates the first output signal twice with respect to time to generate a course length value indicating the total distance travelled by the probe. The microcomputer also calculates a computed distance value by integrating the first output signal twice with respect to time over the time interval between the generation of first and second joint-indicative signals as a result of the successive passage of one pipe joint by the two casing collar locators. The computed distance value is compared by the microcomputer with a stored distance value representing the measured distance between the casing collar locators.
