  • Patent number: 6683526
Abstract: A communications system is provided for communicating information to and from recipients scattered over wide geographic areas. A computer controlled head end communications interface adds address information to a message in accordance with who the intended recipients are. A media router directs the message through appropriate transport media in accordance with the address information. Preferably, the messages are communicated, at least in part, over existing paging systems. Additional transport media include existing power distribution networks, twisted wire pairs and fiber optics networks. Bi-directional reporting capability is provided. The system is well-suited for applications such as remote reading of utility meters, communication of emergency warnings, bi-directional alarm reporting, time synchronization, and encryption/authentication.

  • Patent number: 6072858
Abstract: A system for detecting and reporting a defect in a telephone line includes a network of utility processors that communicate over a power line. Each utility processor monitors a telephone line connected to the processor. The utility processor includes a processing element, a line sensor, a telephone interface and a power line communication interface. Each utility processor reports a defect in the telephone line by sending message to a second utility processor via the power line. The second utility processor reports the defect to a central office via a telephone line.

  • Patent number: 4857916
Abstract: A system for identifying an individual includes a graspable member and a plurality of pressure sensors at preselected locations on the graspable member for developing a uniquely identifying signal or print indicative of the pressures exerted by an individual's hand in grasping the graspable member. Additional structure is provided for storing a plurality of such pressure indicative signals and for comparing the stored signals against later acquired signals in order to verify the identity of an individual.
