  • Patent number: 5335808
Abstract: A pop-top can lid is easier to open than conventional lids, and includes a generally horizontally extending can cover plate having a peripheral rim. It also has a scored area medial of the rim. An elongated generally horizontally extending lift tab is pivotally secured to the upper surface of the plate at a pivot point medial of the rim by a rivet or the like. The tab is divided into an elongated lift arm with finger-receiving opening on one side of the rivet and a shorter drive arm on the opposite side of the rivet. The drive arm is directly over the medial portion of the scored area. A bubble integral with the plate extends upwardly therefrom in the scored area and is capable of being inverted by downward finger pressure. Then the drive arm is able to be easily rotated down thereinto, thus automatically raising the lift arm well above the plate surface so that it can easily be grasped by the fingers.

  • Patent number: 5281185
Abstract: Various toy building blocks, various connecting members and a variety of panels which combine to form a unique system for the creative enjoyment of children of all ages. Various patterns for the blocks would be formed out of a substantially flat semi-rigid material having a uniform thickness. These patterns would be folded by the end user, using fold lines incorporated into the patterns, so as to form blocks. These would include the basic cube and longer blocks that would be some multiple of the basic cube. Also included would be five sided blocks which are one half the size of a basic cube. All of the blocks would have slots at uniformly spaced points which would allow the insertion of connecting pieces which would be formed of a resilient, and therefore slightly compressible, material. These connectors would be slightly thicker than the width of the slots. This would allow for a tight fit which, based on friction, would hold the various blocks together.

  • Patent number: 4920009
Abstract: Magnetically isotropic, fine grain, RE.sub.2 Fe.sub.4 B phase containing particulate material is hot pressed to full density and bonded to a metal backing layer of desired shape and composition. Additionally, if desired, the fully dense isotropic material can be further deformed in a direction lateral to the press direction so as to strain the particles to align the preferred magnetic axes of the crystal grains therein and thus form a laminate of a magnetically anisotropic magnet layer bonded to a metal backing layer.

    Assignee: General Motors Corporation
Inventors: Robert W. Lee, John J. Croat
  • Patent number: 4881985
Abstract: A method to produce rare earth (RE), iron, boron type anisotropic permanently magnetic material includes forming magnetically isotropic coarse powder particles of melt-spun alloy with a very fine grain RE.sub.2 FE.sub.14 B phase. The particles are mixed with inert particles of a size and of a weight percentage of the mixture to separate the powder particles for preventing hot work bonding therebetween. The mixture is hot pressed to cause the magnetically isotropic particles to be compressed in a direction parallel to the press direction so as to strain the particles to cause crystallites to be oriented along a crystallographically preferred magnetic axis resulting in particles of anisotropic permanently magnetic material.

Inventors: Earl G. Brewer, Robert W. Lee, John J. Croat
  • Patent number: 4859410
Abstract: A method to increase the volume fraction of magnetically aligned material in rare earth (RE), iron, boron type anisotropic permanently magnetic material includes forming an adaptively shaped fully dense substantially magnetically isotropic preform from relatively coarse powder particles of melt spun alloy with a very fine grain Re.sub.2 Fe.sub.14 B phase. The preform is heated and die upset to provide uniformity of strain in the perform as it is conformed to the die thereby to cause an increased percentage of the crystallites to be oriented along a crystallographically preferred magnetic axis which increases the energy product of a resultant magnet.
