  • Patent number: 4236368
Abstract: Apparatus and method for closing and sealing lined taper top cartons wherein the cartons are advanced in a path of travel with their liner mouths open, the end walls of said carton and the opposite ends of the liner being simultaneously deflected inwardly and the front and rear carton walls and the opposite sides of the liner mouth concurrently displaced toward each other to juxtapose the upper edges of the front and rear walls with the liner mouth flattened therebetween, the flattened liner mouth then folded upon itself to form a double thickness mouth, the folded liner mouth and an end closure flap hinged to the carton rear wall then being simultaneously folded over the upper edge of the carton front wall and the folded closure flap secured to the front wall of the carton.

  • Patent number: 4197963
Abstract: An improved end closure for a prelined carton formed from a knocked-down tubular carton structure, the end closure comprising an opposing pair of innermost closure flaps and an opposing pair of outermost closure flaps, the innermost flaps each being diagonally scored to define a triangular tab portion at one end thereof, the triangular tab portions being adhesively secured to the mouth of the liner mouth as an incident of erecting the carton, the tabs being folded inwardly by the liner mouth as it is expanded and flattened for sealing, the infolded tabs assisting in positioning the liner mouth for sealing and also serving to facilitate the infolding of the ends of the sealed liner mouth as an incident of infolding the innermost closure flaps to overlie the end of the carton body.

  • Patent number: 4063403
Abstract: Apparatus for automatically closing cartons having self-sealing reclosable top closures adapted, when closed, to lie within the confines of the carton bodies, the end closures having opposing pairs of sealing flaps adapted to be juxtaposed in face-to-face contacting relation, preferably with the mouths of carton liners interposed therebetween, the juxtaposed sealing flaps and liner mouths being displaceable downwardly to close the cartons and thereafter displaceable upwardly to reopen the cartons, the apparatus comprising a series of continuously moving carriages which receive and advance the openended cartons in a path of travel, the cartons being first acted upon by sets of folding fingers which concurrently infold the leading and trailing end closure flaps and the projecting ends of the liners, whereupon sweep means act to juxtapose the opposing pairs of sealing flaps with the liners interposed therebetween.

  • Patent number: 4005815
Abstract: A one-piece paperboard carton for relatively heavy articles, the carton having a reclosable top closure and a self-contained carrying handle formed in one of its body walls, the body wall in which the handle is formed being reinforced in the area of the handle by a plurality of thicknesses of paperboard one of which comprises a flap extension carried by one of the top closure flaps, means being provided to secure the flap extension in handle reinforcing position when the top closure is in the fully closed position.

Inventors: Robert W. Nerenberg, Frank B. Herzog
  • Patent number: 3981432
Abstract: A tightly sealed carton structure wherein an opposing pair of innermost end closure flaps are hingedly connected to the carton body walls along lines of articulation defining inwardly projecting ridges, the innermost closure flaps each comprising first and second flap parts hingedly connected together with the second flap part reversely folded and adhesively secured to the undersurface of the first part to form a double thickness reinforcing flap, the second flap part being of a length such that its free end edge coincides with the projecting ridge of the line of articulation connecting the flap to the carton body, the free end edge of the second flap part being in wedging engagement with the ridge defining line of articulation when the double thickness flap is infolded at right angles to the carton body wall, thereby providing an essentially rigid planar supporting surface over which the remaining end closure flaps may be folded and tightly sealed; the second flap parts preferably have laterally projecting e

  • Patent number: 3937393
Abstract: A one-piece hinged lid carton formed from a flat-folded carton structure having a tubular body and end closure flaps, the tubular body having an additional body panel and a detachable glue flap which define the top panel and front panel of the lid, with selected end closure flap defining the side panels of the lid, the remainder of the end closure flaps defining the end walls of the carton body, the top wall of the carton body having a dispensing opening therein which is closed by the lid, and preferably the carton will be provided with a protective liner as an incident of its fabrication, with the liner adhered to the undersurface of the top wall in the area immediately surrounding the dispensing opening, thereby facilitating the puncturing of the liner for removal of the contents of the carton through the dispensing opening.
