  • Patent number: 7050806
Abstract: In a wireless communication system having sometimes mobile subscriber units and a plurality of fixed network devices located at cell sites, a multimode acquisition protocol is provided at each subscriber unit which first senses whether the subscriber unit is static or mobile from the nature and quality of the communication links with nearby network devices and then enables an acquisition protocol suited to either static mode or mobile mode. In a specific embodiment, the protocol initiates procedures to change acquisition mode from static to mobile upon failure of the subscriber unit to sense three consecutive scheduled polling packets sent by a linked network device or upon loss of communication with any locally-known network device or upon failure to transmit 25 consecutive data packets. In such case, the procedure is initiated to determine whether it is appropriate to switch to a mobile mode for purposes of acquisition.

  • Patent number: 6647053
Abstract: A method and a system for determining a channel mask in a network device in a microcellar network are provided. An exemplary embodiment uses a weighted average of the background noise on a channel of the network device to determine whether the channel should be masked out. One embodiment provides a method for determining a group of channels from a plurality of frequency hopping channels received by a wireless communications device, the channels in the group being excluded from receipt by the wireless communications device. The method includes the steps of determining an indicator based on a received noise measurement at a first time for a channel, then determining a weighted average at a second time for the channel, the weighted average including the indicator, and then selecting the channel as a member of the group, upon an indication that the weighted average at the second time is above a threshold.

  • Patent number: 6445688
Abstract: A method and a system are provided to determine and thus select the best choice for antenna to be used by a network device having a plurality of directional antennas for a particular sending source. The determination is made using on a metric based on the success rate of packets received at a particular directional antenna from the sending source and secondarily on a received signal strength indicator. The determination is stored and made available for processing such that a router is able to request communication through a device with a destination via the second wireless communication device without knowledge of the best antenna match. In a specific method the first communication device broadcasts packets, via each associated directional antenna, to query for the existence of the second wireless communication devices.
