Patent number: 7469809Abstract: A carrier for a portable device having a shoulder strap having a padded region and a cord region. The padded region is adapted to rest on a superior portion of a person's shoulder. A shoulder strap catch is adapted to be coupled at an end thereof to a portable device; and the shoulder strap catch defines an opening through which the cord region of the shoulder strap is slidably retained. The portable device may be moved from a carry to a use position, along the shoulder strap, without dislodging the padded region. In addition or alternatively, the carrying apparatus is a hand strap coupled at a first end to side of a portable device at substantially a center portion thereof. The second end of the hand strap is removably coupled to a strap attachment bracket positioned proximate the opposite side of the portable device, and having a bracket attachment area that can be reversed to support a right or left-handed orientation.Type: GrantFiled: October 8, 2004Date of Patent: December 30, 2008Assignee: International Business Machines CorporationInventors: Luis Ernesto Elizalde Rodarte, Kevin Laverne Schultz, Ronald Alan Smith

Patent number: 6727894Abstract: A flexibly interfaceable portable computing device includes a display coupled to a processor, which is coupled or selectively coupled to either or both of a keyboard and a recording unit. The display and the keyboard provide a first user interface to the processor. The recording unit is superimposable with a removable markable surface. A stylus allows user marking on the markable surface. The stylus provides a stroke signal and a stroke mark. The recording unit, the markable surface, and the stylus provide a second user interface to the processor. Optionally, the display also contributes to providing the second user interface to the processor. Switching among viewing modes for the display, and synchronization of information between the processor and a processor of the recording unit are also provided. A casing can enfold the display, the keyboard, and the recording unit to form a relatively slim profile.Type: GrantFiled: June 9, 2000Date of Patent: April 27, 2004Assignee: International Business Machines CorporationInventors: John Peter Karidis, Krishna Sundaram Nathan, Ronald Alan Smith, Robert Edward Steinbugler

Publication number: 20040036681Abstract: A computing system includes a user interface for supplying data by filling in a form with a marking stylus, with movement of the stylus across the paper being tracked to produce input data signals. The form includes a form identifying area in which form identifying information unique to the type of form is printed to be traced by the stylus, causing the system to recognize the type of form being filled in. After the type of form is recognized, input data from the form is stored for subsequent processing in locations determined according to the type of form. Marking within a termination area may be used to indicate completion of an individual form.Type: ApplicationFiled: August 23, 2002Publication date: February 26, 2004Applicant: International Business Machines CorporationInventors: Karen Ruth Kluttz, David Andrew Sawin, Ronald Alan Smith

Publication number: 20030154291Abstract: A modular computer system includes a core unit comprising a processor and a memory; a removable modular accessory; a docking connector for connecting the accessory to the core unit; and one or more subsystems contained within the accessory. The system is partitioned such that any of the cooling, power or input/output subsystems can be disposed within the modular accessory such that these subsystems can be removed from the system by removing the accessory. The core unit by itself is not useful to a user because it lacks power, cooling, or a user interface. The core unit can be connected into any of a variety of accessories and it adapts its functions to the system resources provided by each type of accessory.Type: ApplicationFiled: December 18, 2002Publication date: August 14, 2003Applicant: International Business Machines CorporationInventors: Kenneth Blair Ocheltree, Masato Anzai, Nicholas R. Patent number: 6307741Abstract: A portfolio computer notebook has outer hardback covers with a flexible spine. A portfolio computer is mounted to the inner surface of one of the covers, and a paper notepad is mounted to the inner surface of the other cover. Each hardback cover has a fold line that bisects it into two panels. The fold lines allow the “footprint” of the open portfolio to be reduced by approximately half of the area required by conventional portfolios without having to bend the cover back over on itself. The footprint is reducible regardless of which component the user wishes to utilize. For example, to use the computer, the user creases the hardback cover of the computer at its fold line such that half of the cover rotates and the other half of the cover stays parallel to the notepad. The computer remains mounted to the parallel half. As the computer and parallel half of the cover are moved over the top of the notepad, the two halves of the computer cover form a z-like configuration with the notepad cover.Type: GrantFiled: February 16, 2000Date of Patent: October 23, 2001Assignee: International Business Machines CorporationInventors: John P. Patent number: 5971268Abstract: A computer Input/Output (I/O) assembly including a stand for supporting an I/O device, such as a display or the like. The stand includes a main support member and an auxiliary support member offset from the main support member. A mechanism providing swivel and rotational motions coupled the main support member to a base and another mechanism providing swivel, rotation, and tilt motions couples the auxiliary support member to the I/O device. The total rotational motion provided by the mechanisms is greater than 360.degree..Type: GrantFiled: October 6, 1997Date of Patent: October 26, 1999Assignee: International Business Machines CorporationInventors: Robert Carlton Lynch, Kevin Henry Myers, Ronald Alan Smith, William Lewis Talley, Edward Randolph Veals
