  • Patent number: 6000468
Abstract: In a broad aspect, the invention is a method and apparatus for the downhole metering and control of fluids injected into a subterranean formation, and includes: a housing sealably connectable to a well tubing; a turbine meter disposed in the housing which provides an indication of flow rate therethrough to a control panel at the surface; and a variable orifice valve means in the housing which alternately permits, prohibits, or throttles fluid flow therethrough. The system has a communication link to the surface, an onboard motor which powers a hydraulic system in the housing that controls the throttling action of the variable orifice valve means, and a system to monitor and report downhole pressure and temperature. The system has the option of reversing the action of the turbine to monitor production from the subterranean formation.

  • Patent number: 5996687
Abstract: A variable flow control device having a substantially cylindrical housing with a valve element connected to an inner surface thereof. The valve is movable between an open position and a closed position in the bore. One or more flow control orifices are located in the valve element for controlling the flow of fluids through the housing when the valve element is in the closed position. A drive mechanism is also connected to the valve element for controlling the size of the one or more flow control orifices. As such, a full bore variable flow control device is provided that controls the flow of wellbore fluids without permanent reduction of the internal bore of the production tubing. By closing the flapper valve and selecting the size of the variable orifices, total control of the production flow of the wellbore can be achieved. By opening the flapper valve, full bore wireline operations to the bottom of the well can be performed.

  • Patent number: 5971004
Abstract: The present invention is a surface controlled gas lift valve designed for high flow rates and used in a subterranean well, comprising: a valve and actuating assembly for sealable insertion in a mandrel. The valve has a variable orifice which alternately permits, prohibits, or throttles fluid flow into the valve, and a detachable and/or remote actuator are disclosed. The valve may be actuated using momentary bursts of hydraulic pressure to the actuating assembly. Variable orifice opening settings are achieved by providing successive bursts of hydraulic pressure to the actuating assembly, which cause a cylindrical cam within the actuating assembly to be indexed between multiple support positions. The orifice valve and the actuator while operatively connected, may be separately installed in or retrieved from the mandrel by either wireline or coiled tubing intervention methods.

  • Patent number: 5861562
Abstract: A flow measurement having a substantially cylindrical housing with a valve element connected to an inner surface thereof. The valve is movable between an open position and a closed position in the bore. A secondary flow passageway is formed in the housing and extends along the longitudinal axis of the housing. A first end of the secondary flow passageway is in fluid communication with the bore below the valve element. A flow measuring device is located near a second end of the secondary flow passageway for measuring the rate of fluid flow therethrough. The housing is adapted to be connected at each end thereof to well tubing. The present invention provides a flow measurement mandrel that diverts the production flow the secondary flow passageway by closing a hydraulically operated flapper valve and routing the fluid or gas through the a venturi flume in the secondary flow passageway for flow measurement. After monitoring flow rate, the flapper valve is re-opened and full bore production is achieved.

  • Patent number: 5586601
Abstract: A longitudinally compact mechanism for anchoring a well tool to a casing includes a plurality of first slip members and a plurality of second slip members. The first slip members and the second slip members are carried on the well tool at the approximate same longitudinal position, and the first slip members are alternately circumferentially positioned with the second slip members. Each slip member is expanded by relative movement of an independent piston operatively connected thereto.

  • Patent number: 5542473
Abstract: A resilient sealing element is adapted for connection to a well tool, with an integral anchoring device, such as a slip, embedded therein. When compressive forces are applied thereto the sealing element compresses and moves its outside diameter and the slip into sealable engagement with the inside wall of a well tubing or casing. Releasing the sealing and anchoring element is accomplished by applying tension to a wire which passes longitudinally therethrough to cause retraction of the slip.
