    Abstract: Each instruction thread in a SMT processor is associated with a software assigned base input processing priority. Unless some predefined event or circumstance occurs with an instruction being processed or to be processed, the base input processing priorities of the respective threads are used to determine the interleave frequency between the threads according to some instruction interleave rule. However, upon the occurrence of some predefined event or circumstance in the processor related to a particular instruction thread, the base input processing priority of one or more instruction threads is adjusted to produce one more adjusted priority values. The instruction interleave rule is then enforced according to the adjusted priority value or values together with any base input processing priority values that have not been subject to adjustment.

    Abstract: A microprocessor includes an externally accessible port and a serial communication bus connected to the port. An execution pipeline of the processor includes a pipeline satellite circuit coupling the pipeline to the bus. The satellite enables an external agent to provide an instruction directly to the pipeline via the serial bus. A dedicated register and register satellite circuit couple the register to the communication bus. The execution pipeline can access the dedicated register during execution of the instruction. In this manner, the satellite circuits enable the external agent to access architected state. The communication bus enables access to the satellites while a system clock to the processor remains active. In one embodiment, the pipeline satellite accesses the pipeline “downstream” of the decode stage such that the set of instructions that may be “rammed” into the pipeline is not limited to the set of instructions that the decode stage can generate.

    Abstract: A microprocessor includes a functional block having dynamic power savings circuitry, a functional block control circuit, and a thermal control unit. The functional block control circuits are capable of altering performance characteristics of their associated functional blocks automatically upon detecting an over temperature condition. The thermal control unit receives an over-temperature signal indicating a processor temperature exceeding a threshold and invokes the one or more of the functional block control units in response to the signal. The functional block control units respond to signals from the thermal control unit by reducing processor activity, slowing processor performance, or both. The reduced activity that results causes the dynamic power saving circuitry to engage. The functional block control units can throttle performance by numerous means including reducing the exploitable parallelism within the processor, suspending out-of-order execution, reducing effective resource size, and the like.

    Abstract: A processor supports logical partitioning of hardware resources including real address spaces of a computer system. An ultra-privileged supervisor process, called a hypervisor, regulates the logical partitions and can dynamically re-allocate resources. Preferably, the processor supports hardware multithreading, each thread independently capable of being in either hypervisor, supervisor, or problem state, and is capable of entering hypervisor state only upon occurrence of certain pre-defined events. A logical partition identifier is stored in a processor register, and can be altered by the processor only when in hypervisor state. Certain bus communications contain a logical partition identifier tag, and the processor ignores such communications if the tag does not match its own logical partition identifier in its register.

Apparent exclusive use of the first portion of the real memory space is permitted by a first one of the threads. Simultaneously with permitting apparent exclusive use of the first portion by the first one of the threads, apparent exclusive use of the first portion of the real memory space is also permitted by a second one of the threads. The threads simultaneously appear to have exclusive use of the first portion and may simultaneously access the first portion.

    Abstract: A real address range check mechanism verifies real addresses generated in a computer system which translates real addresses from effective addresses, some of the effective addresses being real addresses not requiring translation. The system has at least two operating modes. In one mode, the range checking mechanism generates an error signal responsive to detecting a real address outside a predetermined range, and in the other operating mode no error signal is generated. Preferably, the computer system's hardware resources, including real address space, is logically partitioned, partitioning being managed by an ultra-privileged process called a hypervisor. Preferably, the processor supports hardware multithreading, each thread independently capable of being in either hypervisor, supervisor, or problem state, real address range checking error signals being disabled in the hypervisor state.

    Abstract: An accounting method and logic for determining per-thread processor resource utilization in a simultaneous multi-threaded (SMT) processor provides a mechanism for accounting for processor resource usage by programs and threads within programs. Relative resource use is determined by detecting instruction dispatches for multiple threads active within the processor, which may include idle threads that are still occupying processor resources. If instructions are dispatched for all threads or no threads, the processor cycle is accounted equally to all threads. Alternatively if no threads are in a dispatch state, the accounting may be made using a prior state, or in conformity with ratios of the threads' priority levels. If only one thread is dispatching, that thread is accounted the entire processor cycle. If multiple threads are dispatching, but less than all threads are dispatching (in processors supporting more than two threads), the processor cycle is billed evenly across the dispatching threads.

    Abstract: A processor interleaves instructions according to a priority rule which determines the frequency with which instructions from each respective thread are selected and added to an interleaved stream of instructions to be processed in the data processor. The frequency with which each thread is selected according to the rule may be based on the priorities assigned to the instruction threads. A randomization is inserted into the interleaving process so that the selection of an instruction thread during any particular clock cycle is not based solely by the priority rule, but is also based in part on a random or pseudo random element. This randomization is inserted into the instruction thread selection process so as to vary the order in which instructions are selected from the various instruction threads while preserving the overall frequency of thread selection (i.e. how often threads are selected) set by the priority rule.

    Abstract: A method and multithread processor for detecting and handling the starvation of a thread. A counter associated with a first thread may be set with a pre-selected value. The counter may be updated in response to receiving a notification. The notification may indicate which, if any, group of instructions has been completed for the first and second threads. The counter may be updated in response to receiving the notification by decrementing a current value stored in the counter if the group of instructions is completed for the second thread and not for the first thread. If the value of the counter reaches a predetermined value, then a thread starvation condition may be detected for the first thread. That is, if the value of the counter reaches the predetermined value, then the first thread may be starved.
