  • Publication number: 20020180371
Abstract: The object of the present invention is to propose a structure of a display device in which water is prevented from passing through the side faces of a display device using an organic light-emitting element and a gap between substrates is made uniform. On the first substrate having the light-emitting element provided thereon, the thicknesses of the layers deposited in the peripheral area, the pixel portion and the driving circuit portion are equalized with each other. Furthermore, an adhesive is provided as thin as possible in the peripheral area of the first substrate so as to bond a second substrate to the first substrate. As a result, the distance between the first substrate and the second substrate can be made uniform throughout the peripheral area of the first substrate, the pixel portion and the driving circuit.

  • Publication number: 20020158568
Abstract: A display device using an organic light emitting element is provided which is structured so as to ensure excellent display performance by avoiding dot defect and improve long-term reliability. The distance between an organic light emitting element and a sealing substrate is controlled using the top of a bank that is placed in a pixel portion and the top of an insulating film that is placed in a driving circuit portion. As a result, a gap is provided between the organic light emitting element and the sealing substrate and a damage to the organic light emitting element can be avoided. Furthermore, the sealing substrate can be as close to an element substrate as possible, thereby keeping the amount of moisture that enters the display device from its sides small.

  • Publication number: 20020075216
Abstract: A signal of a signal line is written in the order from a pixel TFT of a pixel with a long response time of liquid crystal. A signal of a signal line is written in a pixel TFT displaying the same gray-scale among pixel TFTs connected to the same signal line. A signal of a signal line is simultaneously written in pixel TFTs displaying the same or approximate gray-scale among pixel TFTs connected to the same signal line. Then, a pixel electrode of a pixel TFT displaying an approximate gray-scale is supplied with a normal signal voltage.

  • Publication number: 20020063841
Abstract: Disclination of an active matrix liquid crystal display device is reduced. Portions of pixel electrodes are formed so as to mutually overlap with a convex portion. If the height of the convex portion is too tall, the amount of light leakage increases due to liquid crystals orienting diagonally with respect to a substrate surface. (See FIG. 1C.) If the height of the convex portion is low, the disclination reduction effect is low. The optimal convex portion height is thus determined.

  • Publication number: 20020024621
Abstract: Disclosed is an active matrix liquid crystal display device designed mainly for alternating electric current drive, in which orientation processing (monostabilization) is performed by a direct current power supply or a direct current voltage applied to a ferroelectric liquid crystal. The liquid crystal is made to respond, and is made monostable while a voltage level is maintained by a storage capacitor. In addition, the liquid crystal may also be made monostable while maintaining a gate clock pulse at a constant level. After forming a transparent conductive film on an element substrate, elements such as TFTs are formed. An electric field is applied by a direct current voltage source between an electrode formed on an opposing substrate and the transparent conductive film. An electric field is applied by a direct current voltage source between the electrode formed on the opposing substrate and the transparent conductive film formed on the back side of the element substrate.

  • Publication number: 20020021377
Abstract: An unstable factor that the orientation of liquid crystal is fixed and left after a drive power source is turned off is reduced, preferable display quality is realized, and long term reliability is improved. After the drive power source is turned off, in order to block an electric field produced by charges left in a first electrode (485), a second electrode 492 is provided to overlap the first electrode. The first electrode is overlapped at 70% or more of its area with the second electrode. In addition, when the first electrode is used as an electrode composing a retaining capacitor 505, the retaining capacitor is overlapped at 90% or more of its area with the second electrode.
