Abstract: Various embodiments include an asset tracking system for tracking an asset in an asset-based industrial process involving the asset passing between a plurality of realms comprising: a distributed database system configured to host a consensus-based ledger of transactional records; a plurality of asset tracking devices each configured to acquire one or more asset attribute values of the asset, wherein each of the realms includes at least one of the plurality of asset tracking devices; and an asset lifetime handler device configured to maintain, in the ledger of the distributed database system, based on the asset attribute values respectively acquired over time by a respective one of the plurality of asset tracking devices, an asset lifetime passport (ALP) comprising a digital representation of a history of the acquired asset attribute values of the asset.
