    Abstract: A total reflection prism includes two prisms having a shape of a triangular prism of a first prism and a second prism. The first prism includes an illuminating light incident face, a total reflection face and a panel reference face. The second prism includes an image light incident face on which image light is incident from the first prism, an image light emitting face from which image light is emitted, and a side end face. An edge line portion of a sharp edge is formed between the image light emitting face and the side end face and therefore, a light amount of OFF light reflected by the edge line portion and projected to a screen becomes extremely smaller than a light amount of ON light and does not effect an influence on quality of a projected image.

    Abstract: A rod integrator includes a quadrangular prismatic light-guiding member with a rectangular cross-sectional shape. The light-guiding member guides a light beam from a first end surface to a second end surface, opposing the first end surface, while the beam is reflected by the side surfaces so that the beam is output from the second end surface. The rod integrator includes a tube-shape body having the first open end portion tightly surrounding the end portion of the light-guiding member on the side of the second end surface, and having the second open end portion from which the beam is output while causing the beam from the first end portion to be reflected by inner mirror surfaces of the tube-shape body. The tube-shape body is arrangedy in a pinwheel shape. First, second, third, and fourth members, each of which has a plate shape and a mirror surface on one side, are arranged on the light-guiding member, such that the tube-shape body has the mirror surfaces facing inside.

    Abstract: A liquid crystal projector splits light from a light source into three lights of three different primary colors, respectively, through an optical system, enters the three lights into three liquid crystal display panels corresponding to the three different primary colors, respectively, combines the three lights reflected from the three liquid crystal display panels using a prism, and projects the combined three lights through a first lens onto a screen.     Abstract: An illuminating light from a light source is separated into a beam containing red and green light and a beam containing blue light and UV rays by a dichroic mirror. The blue light is reflected by a first PBS and enters to a liquid-crystal display corresponding to the blue light. On the other hand, the beam containing the red and green light is separated into the red light and the green light by a polarization rotator and a second PBS, and the separated red and green lights enter to liquid-crystal displays corresponding to each color light. Blue, green and red image lights emitted from the respective liquid-crystal projector are composed by a composite prism. An UV cut filter is disposed between the dichroic mirror and the first PBS. The UV cut filter removes the UV rays from the optical path of the blue light, by absorbing the UV rays.

    Abstract: A projection unit is provided with two stop-changing mechanisms, which are respectively disposed in an illumination optical system and a projection optical system to adjust an effective luminous-flux diameter. A stop controller controls the stop-changing mechanisms in accordance with a brightness level of an inputted video signal to make the effective luminous-flux diameter optimum. This diameter is adjusted so as to be large in a case of a high brightness level, and so as to be small in a case of a low brightness level. When the effective luminous-flux diameter is small, peripheral light of the luminous flux is cut so that contrast becomes high. A screen image is brightly displayed when a picture has the high brightness level, and is displayed in high contrast when the picture has the low brightness level.

A second bonded face 22 and a fourth bonded face 26, each having a dichroic film for a second color light, are arranged on the same plane. The first bonded face 20 and a third bonded face 26, each having the dichroic film for a first color light, are deviated by a predetermined distance. The distance of this deviation is adjusted so that an image formed by the light having reference image information corresponds to the image of the reference image information. The light is made incident on and reflected by the first bonded face and the third bonded face. Therefore, an appropriate image quality can be obtained without depending on a right angle precision.
