  • Patent number: 8725719
Abstract: In accordance with certain embodiments, requests to collect structured data in a web page and to subscribe to that structured data are received. This structured data is stored in a data store to allow offline use of the structured data. In accordance with other embodiments, a computing device displays multiple links each of which identifies a different one of multiple web pages. Additionally, the multiple pages include structured data. The display of these multiple links is altered as the computing device detects changes to the structured data in the web pages. In accordance with other embodiments, a web page includes structured data that has been subscribed to. The computing device detects changes to the web page, and notifies a user of a change to the web page only if the change is a change to the structured data and not a change to other portions of the web page.

  • Patent number: 8595259
Abstract: An application programming interface (API) layer is implemented on a computing device. The API layer allows a local application(s) executing on the computing device to access web data in a data store layer, and further allows a remote application(s) that is executing on some other computing device to access the web data in the data store layer. Additionally, this web data can include web pages, some of which may include structured data and some of which may not include structured data. A web browser is permitted to access the web data store via the object model, and generate a user interface based at least in part on these web pages.

Abstract: Discovery of services between devices is provided prior to establishing a connection between devices, including wireless-enabled devices or devices that are communicatively coupled to wireless access points or other wireless communication devices. Discovering services prior to establishing a connection may facilitate finding a desired service. The services that may be discovered may be, for example, print services, camera services, PDA services or any other suitable services. Services may be discovered using 802.11, UWB or any other suitable wireless technology. As one example, particular services may be requested. As another example, services that are provided by a device may be advertised.

  • Patent number: 8285855
Abstract: A method and user interface for informing a user of the status of a network connection are provided. Conventionally, the “connected” icon in the system tray only informs the user that the computer is linked to a network medium, such as an Ethernet or wireless access point. This icon does not indicate whether a routable IP address has been obtained. In this invention, an icon is used to inform the user that the network connection is disabled, connecting, connected (routable IP address obtained), or in a warning state. The warning state indicates that a non-routable IP address (e.g. autonet address) has been obtained, which will likely be unsatisfactory to the user. However, when connected to an 802.11 ad-hoc network, or when IP status checking is disabled, a non-routable IP address is deemed acceptable, and thus the “connected” icon is displayed.

  • Patent number: 8074272
Abstract: Tools are described that notify a user of a security risk in a network browser. The tools can determine that a security setting of a network browser poses a security risk and notify the user of this risk. In some situations the tools also enable a user to reduce the security risk with a single user action. This single user action can alter one or multiple security settings responsible for the security risk.
