  • Patent number: 9912041
Abstract: Antenna carriers with magneto-dielectric material and beam-shaping elements for enhanced performance and radiation safety of electronic devices are described. One electronic device includes a housing, an antenna element disposed on an antenna carrier, and a printed circuit board (PCB) disposed within the housing, the printed circuit board including radio frequency (RF) circuitry. The antenna carrier can be made up of a plastic cap, a ground plane, and a magneto-dielectric substrate with both dielectric and magnetic properties. The plastic cap is disposed at a first side of the housing and the magneto-dielectric substrate is disposed on a top surface of the plastic cap. The antenna element is disposed on a bottom surface of the magneto-dielectric substrate and electrically coupled to the RF circuitry. The antenna element radiates electromagnetic energy in a resonant mode and the magnetic property of the magneto-dielectric material increase efficiency, frequency bandwidth, or both.

  • Patent number: 9608327
Abstract: The range of a Near Field Communications (NFC) in an electronic device is boosted by positioning a magnet near the center of a spiral loop NFC antenna. The magnet interacts with a modulated magnetic field generated by the antenna, concentrating the power of the modulated field. The magnet may be part of another component of the device, such as a magnet in the zoom mechanism of a camera. If the electronic device has a metal case, performance of the NFC antenna is further enhanced by including an opening through the metal over an axis of the magnet and a segment of the antenna's spiral loop, and by extending the opening to eliminate a parasitic current pathway around the antenna. The extended opening in the metal case significantly reduces the effect of eddy currents generated in the housing that counter the NFC magnetic field.

  • Patent number: 9484631
Abstract: Antenna structures and methods of operating the same of an electronic device are described. One apparatus includes a single radio frequency (RF) feed and a folded monopole element coupled to the single RF feed. The folded monopole element is an integrated WAN/GNSS antenna that receives electromagnetic energy in a first frequency band and receives electromagnetic energy in a second frequency band. The first frequency band is a wireless area network (WAN) frequency band and the second frequency band is a global navigation satellite system (GNSS) frequency band. The apparatus further includes an impedance matching circuit coupled to the single RF feed. The impedance matching circuit includes a diplexer to extract out GNSS frequency signals received by the folded monopole element from WAN signals received by the folded monopole element.

  • Patent number: 9397727
Abstract: An electronic device including a Near Field Communication (NFC) antenna and a slot antenna is described. The slot antenna may be formed by a slot opening in a housing of the electronic device. The slot opening may be shaped as a rectangular slot, a T-shaped slot, or T-shaped slot leading into a circular opening. The slot opening exposes the NFC antenna and allows the NFC antenna to radiate in a first frequency band while the slot antenna radiates at a second frequency band.

  • Publication number: 20150222020
Abstract: Example embodiments disclosed herein relate to a tunable antenna structure. A short arm of an antenna structure is coupled to a matching circuit, where the matching circuit is coupled to an input signal. A long arm of the antenna structure is coupled to at least one active tuning element. The short arm is for tuning the antenna structure to a high frequency band and the long arm is for tuning the antenna structure to a low frequency band.
