    Abstract: A method for translating symbols into variable-length code words is disclosed. The method includes the steps of a) generating a memorized code word from a code-book memory by inputting a symbol to the code-book memory in which the variable-length code words are stored; b) detecting a length of a variable-length code word included in the memorized code word on the basis of selected code words, levels defined in a Huffman code tree by each of the selected code words, and numbers of terminal nodes in each of the levels, wherein the selected code words are generated by selecting m bit among the memorized code word K times, where m=1, 2, 3, 4, . . . , K, and K denotes a maximum length of the variable length code word; and c) accessing the variable-length code word from the memorized code word according to the length of the variable-length code word. Therefore, the method makes it possible to translate the symbols into the variable-length code words without storing the length data in a memory.

    Abstract: In a method for exactly sampling a synchronous pattern from read data including an error from a recording medium and an apparatus for carrying out the method, a system clock signal is received and the starting portion of each data region concerning the read data from the recording medium having a track structure is counted by using the received system clock signal. The counting value is compared with a standard counting value and the present data region is judged according to the compared result. A same random synchronous signal as a synchronous pattern concerning the data region judged from each data region of the read data, is generated. A first and a second sampling signals are generated in a synchronization block of a unit based on the first and the second synchronous pattern generated from the random synchronous signal. A normal synchronous pattern concerning each data region is sampled based on the random synchronous signal and on the first and the second sampling signals.

    Abstract: Disclosed are method and apparatus for decoding variable length codewords such as a digital image signal at a high speed using a Huffman code tree, in accordance with the present invention, since a variable length coded codeword is stored in a look-up memory in a node order according to levels of a canonical Huffman code tree structure, and the node order of the coded codewords is detected by a predetermined calculating operation so that the node order is used as an address of the decoding codeword when decoding the variable length coded codeword. Therefore, the variable length code decoding is achieved in a manner which simply stores variables in a memory and a latch without changing a hardware when a Huffman code tree is changed by an operation of a central system.
