Patent number: 5742950Abstract: An apparatus for pressure assisted flush toilets that comprises an air tight enclosed flush tank, a feed valve, a volume control device and a flush valve. The flush tank is normally empty when it is not in use. A push on the feed valve starts a flush cycle by feeding the flush tank with pressurized supply water. The incoming feed water fills the flush tank and at the same time compresses the entrapped air therein. When the tank is filled to the desired volume, the volume control device triggers to close the feed valve and opens the flush valve. Then the pressure of the compressed air in the flush tank discharges the water to the toilet bowl. The discharging water stream from the flush tank cleans the toilet bowl. After the flush the flush tank remains empty until next use.Type: GrantFiled: September 6, 1996Date of Patent: April 28, 1998Inventor: Shih-Chih Chang

Patent number: 5131622Abstract: A metering valve for water faucet that is triggered at the water discharge by a light touch on the trip stem so that the hand that triggers the valve is ready at the washing position at the start of the water flow. The disclosed metering valve consists of a trip stem which penetrates through the valve outlet port to the exterior of the valve. There is a pressure chamber wherein the pressure controls the open and closure of the valve. The pressure in the pressure chamber is determined by means of feed and bleed. In the closure mode the bleed opening is blocked and the pressure chamber is pressurized by the water supply through the feed. A light touch on the trip stem causes the bleed to open and a depressurization in the pressure chamber. This opens the valve and starts a metering cycle. After the trip stem is release, the bleed is blocked again and the pressure chamber starts to recover its pressure slowly through the feed flow path.Type: GrantFiled: December 3, 1990Date of Patent: July 21, 1992Inventor: Shih-Chih Chang

Patent number: 4842198Abstract: Irrigation systems which use sprinklers can cause local flooding in the event of either a sprinkler head failure or a broken riser. The result is localized crop damage, irrigation water wastage, land erosion, and deprivation of water for the remainder of the circuit. The disclosed invention provides a method of and, a device for, protecting the irrigation land from the above mentioned potential damage. The disclosed invention comprises an automatic flow shut off device situated between the distribution joint and the individual sprinkler head. The flow shut off device detects and responds to the excess flow caused by the damaged sprinkler and subsequently isolates the water flow to the affected sprinkler. In so doing, the device allows the remainder of the irrigation circuit to operate uninterrupted, temporarily without the service of the damaged sprinkler.Type: GrantFiled: October 26, 1987Date of Patent: June 27, 1989Inventor: Shih-Chih Chang

Patent number: 4793190Abstract: A device for measuring and indicating fluid flow around a flow bend such as an elbow consists of a housing which confines the flow bend and a flow cavity which is connected with the outer side of the curvature of the flow bend. There is a rotor with a number of substantially radial blades which is free to rotate about a fixed axis in the flow cavity. The hydrodynamics of the flow around the bend generates a secondary circulating flow in the cavity which induces a vortex flow therein and the vortex strength increases monotonically with the rate of the bend flow. The rotor, which is substantially co-axial with the vortex, is driven by the vortex to turn in the flow cavity. The rotating speed of the turning rotor is monitored by a sensor which provides the flow rate measurement through a predetermined correlation. For sight flow indication application a view port is provided for visual observation of the rotor which provides a positive indication of fluid flow in the flow band.Type: GrantFiled: July 23, 1987Date of Patent: December 27, 1988Inventor: Shih-Chih Chang

Patent number: 4745877Abstract: A rotary sight flow indicator which provides a visual indication of fluid flow and of the flow direction by the rotation of a shrouded cross-flow rotor. The sight flow indicator consists of a housing with a cavity containing the rotor and its shroud, and at least one view window by means of which the fluid inside the housing and the motion of the rotor can be observed. The rotor comprises a number of radial blades attached to a rotatable shaft placed substantially normal to the flow direction. A stationary shroud is positioned around a section of the circumference of the blades which shields the rotor blades from flow impingement during a portion of rotation. The asymmetric flow impingement on the rotor blades so created causes an unbalanced torque and consequently causes the rotor to turn.Type: GrantFiled: January 12, 1987Date of Patent: May 24, 1988Inventor: Shih-Chih Chang

Patent number: 4267052Abstract: A method of and an apparatus for aerating and circulating a liquid in a vessel comprising utilizing a surface aerator and a bottom mixing rotor mounted on a hollow common shaft. The rotor entrains liquid and air into the hollow center of the common shaft from the liquid surface region and affects a downward two-phase flow in the hollow center. The gas-liquid mixture is subsequently injected into the liquid body through the channels of the rotor which communicate with the hollow center of the shaft. The discharged jet streams disperse the entrained gas bubbles throughout the liquid body and provide turbulent mixing in the bottom section of the vessel. The present invention not only provides sufficient bottom mixing but also enhances the mass transfer efficiency of the surface aeration by enriching the gas content in the surface layer of the liquid.Type: GrantFiled: December 10, 1979Date of Patent: May 12, 1981Inventor: Shih-chih Chang

Patent number: 4211733Abstract: A process and apparatus for mixing a gas with a liquid in a reactor vessel, in which a gas-liquid downward flow results in the pressurization of said gas in a separation chamber. The separated liquid in said chamber is injected back into the reactor by a pump means for generating jet streams while the separated gas is introduced into the mixing zones of said jets. The turbulence produced by said jet streams promotes an efficient gas-liquid mass transfer in the reactor vessel.Type: GrantFiled: December 26, 1978Date of Patent: July 8, 1980Inventor: Shih-chih Chang

Patent number: 4207180Abstract: A method and an apparatus for promoting gas-liquid reaction in a reactor comprise pumping the reacting liquid to a predetermined height in a flow conduit. Gas is admitted to the liquid flow course to affect entraining gas in the flowing liquid and forming a gas-liquid mixture in the flow conduit. Said gas-liquid mixture is then guided to flow downwardly in a sustaintially vertical tube and subsequently discharged in a submerged eductor means for inducing a secondary circulating flow in the reactor. The circulating flow of the reactor liquid disperses the discharged gas homogeneously throughout the reactor and promotes a effective gas-liquid mass transfer.Type: GrantFiled: January 11, 1979Date of Patent: June 10, 1980Inventor: Shih-chih Chang
