    Abstract: An electromagnetic wave radar device mounted on a car, which helps improve external appearance of a car without impairing radar function, and is fabricated using a decreased number of parts at a reduced cost. The electromagnetic wave radar device comprises an electromagnetic wave radar body 1 mounted on a car 2 and for transmitting and receiving electromagnetic waves of a predetermined frequency, and a radome portion made of a material which permits the electromagnetic waves to transmit through and covers the electromagnetic radar body, the electromagnetic wave radar body being disposed on the side of the back surface 30A of the bumper 30 of the car, and the radome portion being formed by a portion of the bumper of the car.

    Abstract: A radome includes a liquid crystal layer, and control electrode layers and a power source for applying an electric field to the liquid crystal layer. The permittivity of the liquid crystal layer changes when an electric field is applied from the power source through the control electrode layers. Thickness and relative permittivity are selected to permit radio waves having the working frequency of a radar antenna to pass through during application of the electric field.

    Abstract: A radar system 100 is integrally accommodated in, for example, a door mounted exterior mirror case, wherein electromagnetic waves are emitted from a transmitting antenna 4 to an area of a right side and a backside of a driver's own vehicle; the electromagnetic waves reflected by objects are received by a receiving antenna 5; thus received waves are amplified by a receiving circuit 6; a Doppler frequency is measured; a situation of danger or safety is judged along with calculations of ranges and relative velocities from the objects in an operating circuit 2; a result of the judgement is displayed by LED7, 8; and a predetermined alarm and control is performed by a control circuit 9, equipped in a body of the own vehicle, based on information from the operating circuit 2, whereby detection of vehicles especially existing in an area being difficult for a driver to observe from a door mounted exterior mirror, for example that on a right back side of the own vehicle, are aided to detect.

The apparatus includes a mirror (3) having an electrically conductive reflecting mirror surface (10) and a low-profile antenna (8) having an electrically conductive antenna element, wherein the low-profile antenna (8) is disposed and combined integrally with the mirror (3) such that at least a part of the antenna element functions as a part of the reflecting mirror surface (10).

The system includes a range finding unit (8) for determining arithmetically distance (R) to the target (6), a distance data processing unit (9) for selecting from plural distance data as obtained a set of distance data indicating the distances which bear an integral multiple relation to one another, a detecting unit (10) for comparing reception amplitude levels (Pr) for individual distance data of data sets with a predetermined threshold level (S) to thereby detect a set of distance data having the reception amplitude levels (Pr) exceeding the threshold level (S), and an identifying unit (11) for identifying discriminatively the distance data based on the first echo from the distance data ascribable to the succeeding multiple reflected waves in the distance data set detected.
