The plurality of dictionaries is respectively intended to detect subjects of different types. A setting unit sets a tracking mode. A selection unit selects the one or more dictionaries used by the detection unit, wherein the selection unit selects a second dictionary at a frequency corresponding to the tracking mode. The second dictionary is different from a first dictionary that corresponds to a type of a first subject detected in a previous image.
