The cathode layer C1, which is disposed on the emissive portion, is utilized only as the cathode of the organic EL element. The wiring layer made of the same layer as the cathode layer is separated from the cathode layer, and electrically insulated from cathode layer. The wiring layer, which is disposed on the pixel portion, is utilized for other than the cathode. The location to divide the wiring layer from the cathode layer C1 is above the circuit portion in order to prevent the lowered open aperture. Therefore, it is possible to increase the number of the signal lines and source lines without lowering the open aperture.

It is preferable that this optical retardation film is inserted between the liquid crystal cell and a polarizer. The number of optical retardation films need not however be limited to one, and several such films may be used. A polarizer and optical retardation film may also be assembled as one unit.

    Abstract: A method of isolating and recovering methacrylic acid from a methacrylic acid-containing reaction product gas resulting from the vapor-phase catalytic oxidation of isobutylene, tertiary butanol or isobutyraldehyde, which comprises introducing the reaction product gas comprising methacrylic acid and various by-products including high boiling substances at a high temperature of 250.degree. to 300.degree. C. into a cooling zone, rapidly cooling the gas therein to a temperature of not more than 100.degree. C. to condense methacrylic acid and thus isolate methacrylic acid, while also converting the high boiling substances to fumes, thereafter introducing the cooled gas containing said fumes into a venturi scrubber, contacting it therein with an aqueous medium to remove said fumes, finally introducing the treated gas into a methacrylic acid-absorbing zone and absorbing methacrylic acid by absorption into an aqueous medium.

    Abstract: A dashpot has a diaphragm provided for defining a pressure chamber and an atmospheric chamber, and an actuating rod secured to the diaphragm and operatively connected to a throttle valve. A cylindrical supporting member is secured to the diaphragm, opposite to the actuating rod, and a spring loaded valve is provided on an end of the cylindrical supporting member. A pipe secured to the dashpot body and having an opening at an end thereof, is projected into the pressure chamber. The opening is disposed to be closed by the spring loaded valve when the diaphragm is deflected by the throttle valve. A solenoid operated valve is provided to communicate the pressure chamber with the atmosphere through the pipe when opened. the diaphragm and the spring loaded valve are arranged such that the spring loaded valve closes the opening of the pipe at a smaller stroke than that of the diaphragm.

    Abstract: An electrochromic display device comprising two electrode substrates, at least one of which is transparent is prepared by applying a solution containing one or more transition metal compounds under an inert atmosphere to the surface of at least one of said electrode substrates. Then, the solution is dried so as to form an electrochromic layer on the surface of the electrode substrate. The drying is carried out by using a temperature ranging between room temperature and 120.degree. C. Finally, the two electrode substrates are fixed in a manner to face each other with an ionic conductor layer or electrolyte layer disposed therebetween to obtain the electrochromic display device.
